PJ Harvey's truly brilliant Let England Shake has sold about 250,000. Adele's 21 has sold 30 million. Bland sells.

There's plenty of room for both Mikael. There's nothing bland about Adele. She's just different to PJ who is a fine artist in her own right. I remember a mate of mine took me to see Harvey in concert before she made it big and she was underwhelming.

Sure Adele is gutted at being called fat, a bad singer and bland by the super sexy, multi talented BF forumites.
She is natural, has a great voice and is down to earth. Whether you are a fan or not I think her voice lends itself to the heartfelt numbers she belts out. Cannot see it fitting 'I've got a brand new combine harvester' or 'Agadoo.' |
|
By:
I've mentioned neither her singing nor her size. I stand by bland though. Same as the other artists with 30M+ selling albums I mentioned. And Dido.

Just had a look on youtube. Over 450 million views for Adels's latest single, from an album I've seen fans describe as 'garbage.' I guess she can churn out any old sh!te and people will buy it.
|
|
By:
Her music is dull as fúck. No idea what she's like as a person. Good on her for being so successful, but I'm not chewed about listening to anything by her.
|
|
By:
The bottom line is Massive Attack would never use her for any of their tracks
Unlike the greats...Liz Fraser,Tracy Thorn,Sinead O'Connor etc ![]() |
|
By:
you don t seriously buy all this shoite about all her songs been about old flames etc,do you seriously believe a woman with a husband and kid would still be writing about old love affairs broken hearts etc unless the sed husband was in on the gig,if true any man worth his soul would show her the door ,who would live with someone still besotted with people from her past, dont no the hubbys circumstances maybe he,s using her as a cash machine,if so she,s as looney as him

A rare talent indeed.
Shame some feel the need to be not very nice about her. |

" I guess she can churn out any old sh!te and people will buy it." Pretty much sums up the world of pop music. |
|
By:
Yes but that's just Mikael D'Haguenet opinion. Many obviously disagree with him.No view is right or wrong.
|
|
By:
Not correct, there is a right or wrong view.
|
|
By:
Whether music or art is good or bad is something that is above and independent of peoples opinion, like a mathematical formula.
Not everyone understands that. |

Yes but that's just Mikael D'Haguenet opinion. Many obviously disagree with him.No view is right or wrong. Indeed bigmo but, as I said in my post, it was an Adele fan who described her new album as 'garbage.' I've never listened to any of her albums. I already knew they were garbage! Tbh, I'm kinda glad that Polly Harvey can only shift 250k copies of a masterpiece, while stuff I consider to be junk sells in the tens of millions. Nowt like a bit of cultural snobbery! |
|
By:
I dispute the 'rare talent' part btw. I've provided names of several 'artists' who churn out middle-of-the-road stuff that gets lapped up by the masses. It's fairly well established that we're a bunch of middle-aged white blokes on here. Most don't bother listening to new music at all, and haven't for years. They do occasionally hear something from the mainstream and latch on to it though.

" I guess she can churn out any old sh!te and people will buy it." Speaking of sh!te I notice that this weeks top 40 contains 7 tracks from that little Canadian turd. |

I'm sure we could cite plenty of fans of any musician who would complain that an album is shiite. Even the great PJ Harvey. I don't subscribe to lfc's view. I remain convinced that such things are subjective and my subjective view is that in my lifetime I can think of four truly great female interpreters of popular music from this country. Two of those I'd class as power singers being Bassey and Winehouse and two who were singers who elicited emotion or what some people call soulful singers. These were Springfield and now Adele. That's how highly I rate her. A measure of which is that she's often better live than on record.
|
|
By:
We'll just go round in circles debating this.I guess We all get a little precious if we rate something and others label it trash.I'm sure you would feel the same if I labeled your favourite artist as trash.
Adele is just one of many wide ranging artists I enjoy listening to.I think it's unfair to label her work as trash though as some posters are. |
|
By:
Let me explain why a work of art/music and its value must exist outside and above peoples opinions. It is simple an exercise in logic.
Have you ever(most people have but not all) listened to a piece of music say at age 13 and thought it terrible or it just had no effect on you. A nd then, perhaps a year later you play again the same piece of music and something starts to happen, you play it a few more times and it hits you like you have discovered something beautiful. And you have. Now what has changed, it is the same piece of music which is now a masterpiece. It hasn`t changed, you have....this is why it is the music that exists and its beauty independent of people and you may or may not find it. |

PJ Harvey is just a Bjork wannabe but without the voice.

By:
I love Björk too. She's a big PJ Harvey fan.
Singing ability barely registers with me, otherwise I'd be listening to Mary J Blige all day. |
|
By:
Wife bought the new CD so I have heard it several times, bit boring re-cycled songs and dwelling a bit too much on the past and with poorer songs. Just my opinion but wife loves it. I do like Adele and thought she was very good on the BBC Special last week. But this album is the same formula, a few very good tracks but rest so bland and forgettable.

By:
the popularity of her is a sad reflection on the state of UK youth musical taste.
When I was young it was meant to be something your parents didn't like, approve of or even understand. |

One could argue that if todays music was better Adele wouldn't get a look in. Sadly most of it is a pile of pants.
