My old laptop runs at the speed of a snail and whirs away as if something is running all the time.
I've tried CCleaner, Malware Bytes, AVG maintenance and Tune up and run Avast.  Perhaps it's just getting old! Any suggestions?

Factory reset is probably the easiest option. Just make sure you save anything important but also have access to the internet for drivers should you encounter any problems.

run task manager and look at the processes tab to see if something is actually running high CPU all the time. Had a similar issue recently with windows update installer in a loop.

My old laptop runs at the speed of a snail and whirs away as if something is running all the time.

What is whirring away: fan or disk?

Use task manager to see what is running. Sort by cpu -- what is highest? Sort by memory -- what is highest?

What operating system does it have?

Operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium.
All CPU is 00
Firefox is 160,400k,  dwm.exe is 18392k and Rapportservice is 16,840k
Whirring is fan so I'll have a look and make sure it's not gunged up with rubbish.
Thanks

A slow laptop can often be due to dust and dirt around the fan and vent which makes the CPU overheat.

May also be worth sitting the laptop on a cooling fan.

Buy a can of compressed air and blow it around the innards.

Buy a can of compressed air and blow it around the innards.

Just this minute tried this KC.
I must say that it has left me a little bloated and rather confusedScared
