'Mad' Angela Merkel has given her backing to a multi-billion euro European Union action plan aimed at encouraging Turkey to cooperate on tighter border controls in an effort to drastically curb the number of refugees and migrants entering the EU.

A late-night summit of EU leaders in Brussels agreed to give its political support to the draft aid deal, including offering Ankara up to €3bn (£2.2bn) to improve the care of refugees, visa-free travel to Europe for Turks from 2016, the resumption of frozen negotiations on Turkey’s EU membership bid, along with other sweeteners in what appeared to be a desperate attempt to gain Turkish cooperation.

Or we could just abandon the refugee convention as it is has been since 1967. Geographical restrictions should be reintroduced. We could for example say that only people from Europe, North America, Australasia, and countries directly bordering to the EU have the right to claim asylum. If we then feel that we don't get enough refugees, then we can pick up some from refugee camps around the world.

Basically the number of people around the world who would be granted asylum if they got the opportunity to claim exceeds the number we are willing to take. Might as well be honest about it, instead of going on as we do now.
