Bloody cold today - gotta stop smoking at work!

Aye, I heard on the radio a couple of days ago that some Bewick Swans had arrived at Slimbridge earlier than ever before, which portents for a very cold winter.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/weather/11926752/Britain-faces-longest-winter-in-50-years-after-earliest-ever-arrival-of-Siberian-swan.html It's been a very cold year in Stoke all year as it is. Not looking forward to it getting any colder. |

Dont they predict a cold winter every year ?

|

Last winter was predicted as the coldest ever... you can't make it up!

The swallows / martens etc left Perth in August.
Geese have been homing in here for over a week. |

Reports of polar bears being sighted just off the NW corner of The Orkneys are surely exaggerated

♫♫ It's the Woody Woodpecker Song ♫♫
|
|
By:
Long time no hear Woody!
|
|
By:
The woodpecker I heard today wasn't accompanied by an orchestra.
|
|
By:
That's a pity.
They must have been out to buy extra winter overcoats! |
|
By:
I've not seen my Greater Spotted Woody since late August.
|
|
By:
Went to Warwick races some years ago.
The last race was won by a horse called Woody Woodpecker. I heard a bloke cursing his luck on the way out. He said ''I wouldn't have minded that last winner but I've been drinking piggin cider all day'' |

"Nature knows".
In the late 1960's when I was 15 and very smart, I remember spouting to my granddad, that there were a lot of berries this year and that I had heard that that meant a bad winter. I can't do his Sussex accent in print, but he said something like, That's (nature) a product o'the past boy, it can't tell the future". As part of a study I was on, thirty years later, I read a scientific paper that said almost exactly the same thing . |

By:
The berries here in Perth are far and few between this year, blackbarn.

|
By:
^ tho the ones that are out are most sweet tasting

A long, hard Winter frost makes for a good summer of berries

Has anyone considered the El Nino effect, yet?

The met office can't be relied upon to get it right, even the BBC are leaving them to their own devices. Nature or technology , nature every time.Off to buy an Arran jumper tomorra.

|
By:
Strangely I've never heard of Skynyrd until tonight even though I was growing up about that time. (ish)
Sounds like a protest song singer/writer. |

It's just a song, JT

I meant Travellin' Man, off course ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edwIdIr2ry4 |

I won't believe it until it's on the front page of The Express and it's about due.

By:
I like that one trilby - thanks.
I'd only heard the Rick Nelson song which now seems tame in comparison. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts7bH2c4SDY |

Like Treetop I have invested in some Aran submariners.

They have also been predicting long, hot summers for about the last 5 years, & all it's done is p*ss down. I would, however, put more faith in a Bewick Swan compared to anyone at the Met Office.
