Wife is interested in a car and I've just done a hpi check which has come back as:
"Alert! Interested registered against a previous plate.
Plate Transfer The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 21/04/2015
***** was applied to this vehicle on 21/05/2014 This VRM has been recorded as being written off The insurance write-off was recorded on 26/08/2006 against a RENAULT LAGUNA RT ********* was applied to this vehicle on 11/12/2008 There are no interests recorded against *******
Now, I was already a bit tetchy about it. Guy said he hadn't done it, then said it's about £5 to do, then said it was done by previous dealer - yet he still doesn't have it.
Can anyone explain to me though what the implication of this is? Is this car stolen and had an old, written off plate attached or something else. Added to this the bonnet, is slightly misaligned on one side compared to the other and the boot doesn't have that soft stop when opening that you usually get which made me think it's been in an accident.
For the record my own car was written off with a bent chassis (which I heard was dangerous). I claimed the insurance but took a cut on the pay-off to keep the car, which I sold to a scrap dealer for approximately £150 more than the insurance company was offering. Within a month I spotted it on the road again!
Take blackestnight's advice and walk away

Not sure what your asking here ? You have done a hpi check and shock horrer a 10 year plus old smoker has some zhistory ,how about starting again here and just saying what model of car ect you are buying and exactly word for word what hpi say .is the car your buying a ren Laguna Rt ? How many previous owners ect ,many cars are written off depends on class of write off ,back in 2006 things were a bit diff ,how much is the car ? What Miles are showing on clock ? A miss aligned bonnet means nothing ,thousands of vehicles suffer from bumps and cheap repairs ,at the end of the day it's down to what price the vehicle is being offered at ,is this vehicle on a forecourt ?

It's not a renault. My issue is why would this plate be transferred to this car earlier this year when the car's from 2008? Why hasn't it just got it's original plate?
We're not getting it. As stated above, I'm not handing over several thousand pounds unless I'm satisfied it's kosher and between the seller acting shady and the hpi showing up something that may be significant then satisfied I'm not.
My question is how significant is that alert if anyone knows. Yes, it's not brand new and may have some history but changes of number plate? Isn't that unusual?

breadnbutter, you seem a little annoyed at this thread
The above was copy and pasted with only the actual reg blanked out. The fact that the reg was applied to an 06 Laguna when the reg is 58 only adds to the intrigue. However, it is real and not a load of effing ess as you helpfully put it.
I was hoping there'd be some here with an answer to my original question and thanks to those on here who have helped, at least in nudging me over the line into not touching it with a bargepole.

I'd never buy a car under a private deal. It's too risky with finance companies not obliged to register borrowing. Pay the extra and go to a dealer, it's worth the peace of mind.
Auctions charge too much indemnity these days. With that on top you're almost back to showroom prices.
Frequent dealers at auctions pay a fraction of the indemnity levied on occasional buyers.

Just a few of many basic questions to ask when buying a piece of used machinery called a car. How old is it, how many previous owners (from new) how many miles has it done (is the mileage warranted), how much service history is there, is there a full/long ticket (mot)is the V5 document present, check tyre condition, make sure ALL the panels line up, etc etc etc.
If you really don't know, then get a mate who does to help you or go on any of the used car forums out there. there are thousands of S/H cars for sale, why waste time on anything that has iffy credentials. who gives a toss if its had a 'personalise plate' was imported or is a Kit or re-build car, run a mile.
Unlike the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens, cup, the car will not be yours for life. Btw the 25-05-2005 (Miracle of Istanbul,)is one of the most glorious days in English football history, and that's from a Spuds fan GL with your purchase

Cheers fox, I had read up and did the usual checks and apart from a couple of things which aren't huge for the age we'd probably be going for it if it wasn't for the hpi check.
I'm just genuinely curious why this kind of thing would crop up though. Why take the plates from a different car? Is it as unusual as I reckon it is and a big red flag?

I had 4 mates in the trade, anything that didn't have FULL HPI approval wouldn't be entertained for a second if brought in by a private seller, of which there were quite a few. Legit dealers won't touch them, good dealers have regular reliable stock sources, mainly from other dealers higher up the food chain who have taken a vehicle (in P/E) that they don't want on their forecourt.
Auto Trader a good place to start, the well know auction site is not trusted like it used to be.
"Is it unusual"................... not if owned previously by Tom Jones
I'll get me coat

Easy first check is to go around the car & put your fingers in between all 4 tyres to the wheel arches & if you can put (say) 4 fingers at the front of the osr between the wheel & the arch but only 2 fingers at the nsr then........
