I had the idea many years ago of creating a much more detailed tube map of London, but of course could not be bothered! I was thinking of detailing the fastest route to various destinations, the quick walk through routes of line change and the position of exits and line changes on platforms. Has anyone produced such a guide or wrote a book?
For instance
Quick walk through routes of line change (i.e. Walk straight across, no stairs or escalators) Oxford Circus Victoria line to Bakerloo line Finsbury Park Victoria line to Picadilly line
Last night I went to to Hammersmith from Tottenham Hale. On the way back, I had a limited time to make my overground train.
I could have gone Victoria line to Finsbury Park changed to the Picadilly line (Too many stops on the Picadilly line - a slow way across London) I decide to change stay on the Victoria line longer and change at Green Park. (Very long walk to the Picadilly line, never again!) On the way back from Hammersmith, I went for Picadilly line to Picadilly circus, Bakerloo to Oxford Circus (much shorter walk), then the Victoria line
The final detail I'd like to note is the position along the train to board for quickest exit. I was thinking of a 1 to 10 position from front to back of the line for the various exits.
So, over to you for your notes on trips across London.
I read somewhere (I think!) about a bloke who was trying to visit all the Tube Stations in one day.
He did any number of dummy runs to establish just such minutiae to enable him to optimise his route. As an aside I think he also ended up running from Morden to Wimbledon in order to achieve his target

rog, these may detail what you read about. I note he made what is no doubt an enthralling video of his trip!

If you're alighting @ Chalk Farm northbound, there are 2 signs saying 'Exit' & 'No Entry.'
Use the 'No Entry' pathway. You will come to a lift.
When the lift doors open, passengers will exit, then you can enter. Move to the front, but keep to the side.
The doors will close behind you.
Doors in front of you will then open, to let the passengers, who followed the 'Exit' pathway, enter.
Top tip if you're going to a gig @ the Roundhouse.

I recall going to the Roundhouse many years ago to see Sham 69. It was sold out and I recall a load of skinheads charging some doors to try to bunk in. My brother and my uncle saw them at a London University back then. The skinheads went on a rampage and were chucking computers out of the window from the first floor!
When going to the Eventis apollo at Hammersmith, when exiting the picadilly line take the left exit from the station
My mate has a good one for Kings Cross which I'll ask me to remind me of.

The Grand Union canal crosses London West to East. You can walk and cycle for large parts. A good, interesting and sometimes quicker way to get around.,

i dont know the answer barry, but i do know that the walk from bayswater station to queensway station would be alot quicker than the tube journey which involves getting the district and circle line to nottinghill then changing on to the central line to reach queensway. why not just walk down queensway, the road that both stations are on?

I remember being particularly impressed with this. He gets off at one station and then, goes through the barriers, along the streets, down the barriers and gets back on the same tube. Fair play, hope it aint fake.

I lived in London for 50 years the 'rule' used to be count the amount of stations you are going to travel multiply by 3 minutes and that's your travelling time, it was uncannily accurate. Don't know how that works today

A GUIDE TO NEWHAMS 4 LONDON UNDERGROUND STATIONS - not to be confused with the DLR
West Ham - Plaistow - Upton Park - East Ham
If you’re a new football fan and following your team when they play away to West Ham, don’t get off at West Ham station or you will be faced with a wait for the next train, or a 3 mile walk. Stay on the train and get off two stops later at the correct stop, which is Upton Park.
Which brings to mind the artistic work of one particular wag many years ago. When going to West Ham Greyhound Stadium the correct station to get off the tube was Plaistow. Lots of new visitors used to get off at West Ham, which is one stop too early if coming in from the west, or one stop too late if coming in from the east.
Help was at hand for westbound travellers, there was an official metal sign in white on a royal blue background that bore the legend ‘Alight here for West Ham Stadium’ until one no doubt disgruntled punter made his mark with a white aerosol spray can. He changed it to ‘SET LIGHT TO West Ham Stadium’ Staff at Plaistow Station were so amused, or too lazy to clean it off, that it remained there for a good years until the early 1970s when the dog track closed its gates for the final time.
Doors and Carriages if you intend to go to Newham, to do some missionary work for example:
Plaistow Station if approaching from the Essex side, get near the middle doors in the 2nd last carriage from the back. If coming in from the west, get in the 2nd carriage from the front, and by the middle doors. When the train stops you will be right at the bottom of the stairs up to the street.
West Ham Station Cautionary note for new travellers to in the rush hour, to avoid shoving your way off, get on the correct side of the train well before your stop, as the doors will open on the opposite side to where you got on. West Ham Station is also a rarity among stations. Due to its geographical surroundings, you will be going DOWN the stairs to the street, not upstairs. London UNDERground.. eh?
Alighting at West Ham or East Ham Stations You need to be in the last carriage if coming from the west, or the first carriage if coming from the east. This puts you near the staircase to the street.
I can’t recall which end of the train to be on for Upton Park, I only ever got off there about 3 times in 50 years, it should be re-named Sh*thole Central.
OTHER NOTES Plaistow Station is the only one of Newham’s 4 stations to have a Licensed London Taxi rank just outside the station doors.
APPEARING IN COURT? You want Plaistow Station, then a taxi or a bus to Stratford Broadway for West Ham Magistrates Court, which is right by a bus stop, or a 250-300 yard walk to Bow County Court. I have no idea why Bow County Court is in Newham. Bow is E.3 and comes under Tower Hamlets, the Borough next door.
For East Ham Magistrates Court, alight at East Ham, it’s then a short walk south to the court.
UNAVOIDABLY STUCK IN NEWHAM FOR THE NIGHT? Rather then spend good money on Travelodge or other such dives, get pissed and make a public nuisance of yourself near one of the crime-free Boroughs 5 police stations. Get nicked, locked up for the night, get a caution the next morning, AND a free breakfast. Choose between Stratford, Plaistow (my personal recommendation) North Woolwich, East Ham or Forest Gate. Dodge Forest Gate nick though, that was rebuilt some years ago to hold those would-be terrorist chaps from the Borough, and is reckoned to be bomb proof, and a tad noisy.

Another idea for this was to make a website from this. An interactive map where you can click on locations and find details. e.g. Local attractions, gig venus, pubs & restaurants etc. Also, a function where you have pair of drop down menus, where you pick your start and end point and you receive the detailed journey - advised route, train position of exits, best exit for local attractions etc. This time next year Rodney, I'll still probably not have bothered!

When going to Charing Cross for the Bakerloo line from the Sports Cafe in Haymarket, it's quite a long walk to the platforms from the station entrance. (Picadilly Circus is probably closer, but my mate was going to Charing Cross, so I walked with him)

Incidentally, the firm that run the sports bar at Waterloo Station now run the sports cafe at Haymarket (near Picadilly Circus). They have not spent two bob on it and it's as shabby & dark as previously. Also, my mate ordered a pizza for close on ten quid and it was of the quality you'd get from a supermarket for under £2! The drinks were obscenely expensive too. I'm not sure how long they have run the sports cafe.
