Aswell as @cockney slang' and 'backslang' there is a third older one still used today it's called Polari which is still in use today particularly among London gays. My ex wife's hairdresser friends used it all the time actors use it too.

There is no in-between, you are either a gullible leftie, or a racist, (which in the real world Is a realist)
The gullible left, were never born in or around London, and the racists ( realists) were.

it's actually called London Luton - as is Southend which could be even further out .Must  be for the benefit of tourists - Yanks would consider Outer Hebredes London though  Crazy

The film "american werewolf in london" is a great example of this, the hero gets attacked in yorkshire, but for some miraculous reason gets treated in a hospital in London! Laugh

The obvious one not yet posted, Big Ben is not the tower but the bell, which chimes in the key of E.

1 there is a miniature version of st pauls cathedral (known as little st pauls) that hangs over the south side of vauxhall bridge. be carfeul you dont fall in the thames if you look for it.
2 the seats in the house of commons are green, the same colour as westminster bridge, the closest bridge to the commons. whereas the seats in the house of lords are red, the same colour as lambeth bridge.
3 savoy court is the only road in london where you drive on the right
4 apsley house which is on hyde park corner is known as number one london
5 chelsea football club is in fulham not chelsea
6 there is only one road within the postcode w1, charing cross road.

boxinthefox, i think the tower is actually queen elizabeth tower, not 100% though.

jollyswagman correct, it was renamed for the Diamond jubilee I believe, don't know the previous name without googling.

Apsley house was home to Arthur Wellesley, aka  1st Duke of Wellington. what a great address.

I know the apartments but did not know that they had snaffled that address, Money talks, I suppose some/most are owned by absentee "investors" ?

just read that link too. i once heard two people with links to the travelling community using a dialect i had never heard before or since. it always puzzled me, perhaps it was this. annoyingly i will never know for sure!

absentee investors indeed boxingthefox. there is a big development in vauxhall called st georges wharf, i read a report yesterday that said at night the lights are only on in about 20% of the entire plot, i know thats not scientific but its a sad state of affairs for sure, imo.

Yes a sad state indeed, .....if you ever hear a gay guy say to his friend "Vada the Package dear" (look at his bulge) run like hell. ShockedLaugh. Just to remind everyone my ex wife was a hairdresser and had many gay friends.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Sorry Bigmo I will stop hijacking your fred now.

Aside from E1 the remaining East London postcodes, through to E18, are in alphabetical order; very few Londoners realise this.

Polari was much used by Julian and Sandy in Round the Horn.

In Brighton in the gay quarter is a restaurant called Bona Foodie. Bona being the polari word for "nice".
