Gorman's maths routine is worth a watch imo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R2B7dInR_E

Like a lot of comedians, he says stuff amusingly and entertainingly, but if you want an old-fashioned gag merchant whose jokes you can re-tell to your mates in the works canteen, he's not your man.

Yes, I think DG's material is well observed and amusing but the only comedian of that sort of genre who makes me laugh out loud is Rhod Gilbert.

I paid to see him a couple of years ago. He was OK, but his slide show presentation thingy is wearing a bit thin.

Never heard of Gorman.

I used to like Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson.

I never see Jim on the telly these days. I think that's a shame because he always made me laugh.

I find it hard to believe that anybody could be worse as a comedian than Lenny Henry.

Bernie Winters was only half of a very abysmal act.
His brother Mike was even less of an entertainer than he was.

Yet they infested our screens for years on variety shows. Top of the bill sometimes as well.

I'd agree, Gorman is pretty poor.

Always good to see Lenny Henry getting a mention......though it would appear from recent efforts, that he's a better comedian than actor. He really is just sh1t.

Not sure if he counts as a comedian, as he also tries to be a ventriloquist, but Jeff Dunham is f'cking woeful. Another worth a mention is Gregg Davies. Any time I've seen him on stage, he looks totally uncomfortable, I think deep down he knows he hasn't got it, and shouldn't really be doing this.....but he's one of those who we're getting told to love whether we like him or not. Even the audiences at his gigs seem to struggle with him. Dire.

@geoff m would lose his tank on McIntyre, who is credited as being one of the reasons the family audience came back to live gigs.

Audiences these days are very kind, having paid £20/25 they are determined to laugh
no matter how poor the material is,indeed McIntyre just has to run across the stage
to get a laugh.Kevin Bridges has sold circa 150 thousand tickets for his Scottish
gigs alone and he gets great reviews but oddly when i ask people what he said they cant
tell me "you had to be there" apparently.

Defending Dave Gorman, I found his show to be warm and engaging. And he had time for his audience too. He's not funny, but his attributes put him ahead of many comedians who are , at first glance, "dominant." The sharp suit, the acid tongue, the willingness to go lower than any heckler in personal insults. Which is pretty much 90% of the comedy big-beasts. Special mention for Michael Macintyre, about as funny as a call to the Samaritans.

But the answer to the original question is Armando Ianucci, a very clever satirist who should never have appeared before an audience. He must be 50 now, though I doubt that anyone at the BBC has had the heart to tell him that he's just not funny.

I think it's essential to have a good drink before you go to one of these shows.
You'll laugh at anything when you're sloshed.

Not that I'd ever sit through a session.

My wife and I have seen many shows over the last decade, some she liked and I wasn't so keen such as Lee Evans and Russel Howard or the otherway round, Mark Steel and Tim Vine. We both enjoyed Andy Parsons, Rich Hall, Dara O'Briain, Milton Jones, Punt and Dennis, Daniel Kitson and Karl Minns.  The only gig which was poor was Andrew Lawrence.  It is the only one where the audience left in near silence.  Bad taste can be funny, I saw Jimmy Carr about 15 years ago and he was funny but Lawrence just made us feel uncomfortable. Example of a Lawrence joke at the gig: a journalist asked me the other day what my life ambition is? I told him standing in my shower and finding a lump in my ball sack

I started to watch a Gorman show on YouTube last night. I hadn't seen him before.

I didn't get far into his show before I got bored.
If he's getting paid to entertain, then he's obtaining money under false pretences.

His comment about the Honey Monster not being the scariest tracksuited creature from the 1970s made me laugh but as a whole his show seems a bit laboured, reminds me of corporate entertainment.  Also Gorman often plays the smaller venues, seating for 4/500 but charges a lot more than his peers. Gorman tickets for these venues are often 25/30 when others go at about £15
