Over 47,000 owners have abandoned their dogs in the past twelve months according to the annual Stray Dog Survey by Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity.

Dogs Trust questions all local authorities across the UK as part of the annual Stray Dog Survey and 2015 findings reveal that 47,596dogs were left behind in council pounds, where they remained unclaimed by their owners. Abandoning a dog puts them at risk of being put down by local authorities after seven days, as they struggle to care for the vast numbers of strays that are picked up on the streets of the UK every day. While Dogs Trust never puts a healthy dog down, 5,142 stray dogs were destroyed by reluctant local authorities in the last year – equating to 14 dogs a day or, one dog every two hours.

In total, 102,363 stray and abandoned dogs have been handled by local authorities between 2014 and 2015, with under half being claimed by their owners. The overall figure represents a slight drop on the previous year’s figures (110,675) but still equates to 280 strays being found across the UK each day. Meanwhile, at Dogs Trust, 43,771 calls have been taken from people trying to give up their dogs in the last 12 months – that’s 3,647 calls a month, 841 a week and 120 a day.

''Every dog owner in England will have to microchip their animal from 2016 under plans intended to cut a rise in strays.''

So all responsible dog owners will have an extra expense to meet and will lead to more abandonments, while the irresponsible owners will carry on as before.

Unless you are blind or have sheep you've got to be mad or stupid to want a dog so it's not unbelievable.

I walked past a car today, guy got out with an old dog he was taking for a walk in a park.
It's sheer joy as it was jumping around like a puppy in excitement brought a big smile to my face Laugh.

I'd prefer a goldfish, though I think fish should be in the sea or the river.

I am allergic to dogs (a night in the house of a dog owner could easily see me in the morgue the next day) and I was bitten twice by dogs as a child so I might be bias, but I can't understand the appeal at all.  The smell is foul.  If a person stunk a house out like a dog you wouldn't go near them.  You have to walk around with a plastic bag to pick up their poop.  Unlike cats, who can live outside and you don't have to pick up poop.  Not that I'd have any pet.

We used to have a couple of guinea pigs, against my wishes, until a thug let his vicious fighting dog crawl under our fence and kill them both.

My daughter's partner's parents are pedigree breeders of Old English Sheepdogs, and Spaniels (of some sort).

They make big bucks out of what is only a hobby.

£1k per sale....£1k per stud (or that kind of figure).

Just with her today and she hates taking her 9 month old son to be in an environment where they now have eleven dogs in the house.

Ok, it's a big house, with big gardens, but the dogs are allowed pretty much everywhere in the house.
Not all at the same time, but it can't be a good thing for a crawling, nine month old child, to be on the floor where animals have walked around having paddled in sh!t and pee all day!

That is shocking. Micro chipping may help. Dogs are such great animals. Had a Jack Russell for 16 years and a lab at present for nine. They bring alot of joy to people lives. So loyal. I hate to see any form of animal cruelty and anyone doing this should be ashamed of themselves. Dog charities do such great work.
