What industry, if any, do you hate or despise the most? E.g. insurance, tobacco, banking, gambling etc.

Supermarkets. Feeling peckish I walked into Sainsbury's to buy a sausage roll. First, they only had own brand ones, no Ginsters. Then when I went to pay the self service machine wouldn't read the barcode. It suggested I type in a code! I had to walk out.

Marketing. Helping to destroy top sport; you have to create a 'brand' for yourself now to be noticed, everything has become about the hard sell, which essentially means the consumer is being lied too or sold shoddy goods etc etc.

Bill Hicks called it years ago: 'By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing… kill yourself.'

I was going to choose the Banking and Finance industry. But, having spotted Wildman's post, I think I will subscribe to the Charity industry. That being the only subscription that they will get from me.

That thing about the charity industries selling info on is so true.
I donated to a charity or two a few years ago and soon afterwards started getting lots of other charities mailing me, often from related areas. It's counterproductive as I now am warey of giving to any charity Ive not given to before as I don't want my info sold on again. Just the other day I got yet another begging letter from a charity I've never given to, they constantly mail me and it goes in the bin.

I subscribe to The Brooke.
Been a subscriber for a number of years and can't say I've received many requests from other charities.
The few I've had have been in the past year or so and I e-mail them to get taken off their lists.

I don't mind so much charities I've given to mailing me as that's kind of expected, but I was getting all sorts.
I particularly hated it when they send me free gifts I didn't ask for to guilt me into donating, a number of them tried it.

Barristers. The law is a game to them. One day they prosecute, the next they defend. No justice there, just ego trips

A friend of mine was knocked from his bicycle, resulting in severe injury and a lengthy insurance claim.  The hourly rate of the barrister was two and a half times that of the brain surgeon who saved his life.

Some pretty despicable industries mentioned on this thread. I think the food industry remains at the top of my list however. My reasoning is that ripping people off financially may be evil, but trying to profit at the expense of other people's health is more evil. It would be different if the food industry were honest and upfront about health risks and potential health risk of the junk they are selling. But typically they are anything but honest and upfront about that. Instead they aggressively rebuff suggestions that their products may not be that healthy. Often the food companies band together in organisations that obstruct, distort and suppress science. Truly evil. The tobacco industry is also very evil for the same reasons I suppose. If I had smoked, or knew someone who smoked it may have topped my list. The tobacco industry is only honest and upfront about the risks of smoking in the western world. In the developing world where legislation is weak they try very hard to increase the number of people who smoke through aggressive marketing, and they don't put any warnings on the packages there.

Yesterday the National Food Agency of Sweden announced that it recommends that children under the age of six do not eat any rice cakes at all, because of the relatively high arsenic content of rice cakes. Do you think the manufacturers of rice cakes voluntarily will print this information on the packages? Would it be the decent thing to do?

Other examples of information I think could be printed on (the packaging of) various food items below:

"Please don't drink much fruit juice if you are overweight and are trying to lose weight. It will make it much harder or even impossible for you to lose weight. You will not feel as full as if you had eaten the same calories from solid food, and you will most likely not compensate by eating less."

"This meat comes from a cow that has been fed **** including feed to which we intentionally have added a little bit of arsenic. On this website ... you can read about how that affects the nutritional value compared with meat from cows that have been grass fed."

"This crop has been sprayed seven times with the world's most popular pesticide. The pesticide is most likely not harmful to you, but it should be noted that it can affect your gut microbiota (and if that can be a bad thing is unclear)."

"Did you know that we humans in the last century have massively increased the sugar content of bananas through cultivation. The bananas eaten by wild monkeys in the jungle are not at all as sweet."

"This type of fish frequently contains quite high levels of mercury. It is best to avoid it if you are pregnant, as the mercury can damage the brain of your unborn child."

"This fish contains more toxins than normally allowed by EU regulations, but we got an exception, and are allowed to sell it anyway."

"The colouring agent in this food is completely unnecessary, but many customers like the nice red colour, so we add it anyway."

"A pretty complicated chemical process is required to make this sunflower oil. It was impossible to extract until the beginning of the 20th century. You can learn more about it here ... There you can also learn more about why many scientists think the balance between omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids may be important for you health. You will get lots of omega 6 from this cheap oil."

Nice one Mr.Anderson. A lot of your points can also be directed at supermarkets who control so much of the food chain now.

Bix, yeah I consider supermarkets to be part of the food industry, and I hate them:) I went grocery shopping yesterday btw. Guess how my local supermarket had reacted to the national food agency's rice cake announcement the other day? Maybe put up a copy of a news article about arsenic in rice products at the shelf where rice cakes are sold? For the benefit of people who didn't read paper the other day I mean. No, in order to boost sales they had put lots and lots of rice cakes at a prominent end-of-aisle display. I'm sure they sell plenty of stuff that's worse than rice cakes, but still... Tells you everything you need to know about how much they care about the health of their customers.

If anyone feels like watching a documentary about the food industry I recommend "Food Inc." It's available at Youtube. I watched it years ago, and then I came to think of it yesterday and watched it again. It's very focused on the American food industry, and depending on your political leanings you may find it a bit preachy and leftist, but I found it interesting it anyway.
