Accrington Stanley ... who's stanley, and why?

Brighton & Hove Albion ... albion?? (albion an old name for Britain, apparently)

In Ordnance Survey maps dating from the mid-late 19th century, the location around the church at which Villa were founded is named as "Aston Villa."

Confused

Allusions to Classical Greece were common in the early days of sporting clubs. The oldest professional club in the Netherlands is Sparta Rotterdam. Over in Amsterdam Ajax took their name from the Greek hero.

When I was following Slough Town as a kid, all the southern England amateur football leagues took their names from Classical Greece: the Rebels played in the Athenian League, while the big boys, like Enfield and Dagenham were in the Isthmian league, while smaller clubs made up the Hellenic and Spartan Leagues (the latter's still going in a different form).
