Anyone know anything about SEO?

There seem to be a lot of people out there making a lot of money out of SEO.

Whenever I talk to someone about the possibilty of redisigning my website, they always seem more interested in selling me SEO services.

It's not difficult to bluff your way through it. That's what 99% of people who call themselves SEO experts are doing. The Internet is awash with these amateurs who spout 2nd hand, 3rd hand information that's out-dated, ineffective or downright dangerous. Almost everywhere you look you'll see mis-informed and over-generalized guff about how to rank on Google.

If you're serious about learning the basics I can direct to a few sources of decent info.

Modern term ... made up, no logic.

Just marketing smoke and mirrors.

It's all about putting words and phrases in your web-site that gets it to the front of Google searches.
Or you can pay Google for that and not bother with the SEO carp.

Best way to get attention to web-site is to include words like ...

naked,  lustful,  busty,  you get the trend ...

Always works for me when I'm searching the net for something.

I thought that if you have a site selling non sex-related items or services, you have to be careful about using words such as, for example, "topless" as you could be penalised by Google.

Why are you applying for a job that involves SEO if you know absolutely nothing about it?

Because I'm looking for writing work and a lot of places want some SEO experience.

I run a couple of websites and 5 years ago when I set up my first I was inundated by SEO experts. The best was the woman who said she could get me to the top of google for just £8,000 a year!

jed, as far as writing goes SEO simply involves sprinkling your prose with the odd phrase which would/could be favourable for google rankings.

Its more about getting quality links

If you want to top Google for keywords like 'new car' or 'loan' £8k a year wouldnt get you anywhere near the first page.

Zazu, that was just the worst example of the claims made by the SEO charlatans who gave me unsolicited "advice".

My website's top or in the top three for searches relating to what I sell but that's because I'm in a niche market.

As Zazu says, getting good links helps. It's also good to be metioned with a link on a highly-ranked site.

It can actually be detrimental to have links to dodgy sites on yours.
