Since 2011, even under the Freedom of Information request`s,
Royal Mail refuse to Reveal how many Passports "Go Missing" However, this makes interesting reading;2008 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1085160/FIVE-passports-lost-post-day-Home-Office-raising-fears-theyre-falling-criminal-hands.html Five passports are lost in the post on an average day, ministers have admitted. This has raised fears they may have fallen into the hands of terrorists or fraudsters. Identity thieves, asylum seekers and illegal immigrants who want to pass as British citizens can use the stolen documents. Figures uncovered by the Liberal Democrats reveal that between 2001 and 2007, government officials lost 12,200 passports in the post. Since February 2004, when the Identity and Passport Service - a Home Office agency - ditched Royal Mail and awarded a multi-million-pound contract to a courier service to deliver the documents, 3,000 have gone missing. Experts estimate that the black market value of the passports, which can fetch £1,700 a time from criminals, is £20million. And in July, nearly 3,000 blank passports destined for British embassies abroad were stolen from a van after the driver stopped to buy a chocolate bar in Oldham, Greater Manchester. |

the new passports have a microchip in them that is also a tracking device,in other words a guy carrying his passport(now a card I believe)can be traced where ever he goes by governments departments.

its an infringement of civil liberties imvho, for example ,if you told the wife you were going fishing for the week end and skipped up to Manchester with the lads, someone could prove you were in Manchester if you have your card in your pocket.now then you would have a problem explaining to the wife how your passport card was in a strip club in Manchester when you were at a lake down in Richmond.

or lets say you were repairing a roof in a brighton hotel the day before you signed on as unemployed in stoke Newington.the department can trace you to the roof.more explaining.
AND the government intend to make it compulsory for everyone to carry their passport/identity card with them over the coming years.the same card will be used for paying bills, car insurance,if you motor tax is up to date and so on. just like in the USA. |
