Good stuff ! (Don't be put off by over-used title)

Adaptation of JB Priestley's stage play. In 1912, a detective (David Thewlis) arrives in a town where a young woman has committed suicide. Interrupting a wealthy family in the midst of a lavish party, he unravels the events that led to the woman's death - an investigation with devastating repercussions as secrets are exposed and each member of the family realises they have all unwittingly played a part. Also starring Miranda Richardson and Ken Stott

Hope you enjoyed it TL.   A very fine and somewhat unusual rendition imo.  The ending (when you think you've seen the ending) never fails.

Wiki :

The struggle between the embattled patriarch Arthur Birling and Inspector Goole has been interpreted by many critics as a symbolic confrontation between capitalism and socialism, and arguably demonstrates Priestley's Socialist political critique of the perceived selfishness and moral hypocrisy of middle-class capitalist society. While no single member of the Birling family is solely responsible for Eva's death, together they function as a hermetic class system that exploits neglected vulnerable women, with each example of exploitation leading collectively to Eva's social exclusion, despair and suicide. The play also arguably acts as a critique of Victorian-era notions of middle-class philanthropy towards the poor, which is based on presumptions of the charity-givers' social superiority and severe moral judgement towards the "deserving poor". The romantic idea of gentlemanly chivalry towards "fallen women" is also debunked as being based on male lust and sexual exploitation of the weak by the powerful. In Goole's final speech, Eva Smith is referred to as a representative for millions of other vulnerable working class people, and can be read as a call to action for English society to take more responsibility for working-class people, pre-figuring the development of the post World War II welfare state.

Bet Comrade Corbyn was quite pleased with the BBC's timing of the showing - been scheduled for months of course, but you'll know what I meanWink - I thought the actor who played Castle(?), the potential son-in-law, was quite brilliant.

Hi TL.

I agree - the acting was excellent, especially David Thewlis.

Hi, never seen play before....always avoided anything with Inspector in title for the last 20 years.

I liked Ken Stott's performance as the patriarch...stunning

The play showed the hypocrisy of the rich and upper classes in 1912
I agree with Ken Stott I see far too much of this today

As a play it of course of highest quality from JB Priestley

Facts,

A few days ago you advised me on the 'British ISIL Fighters killed by RAF' thread :

I would gladly share my home with a desperat refugee from a war torn country. It's the only moral and  humanitarian thing to do.

You have subsequently been asked the following questions twice on that same thread, but alas we have yet to receive any answer.

How many previous refugees from 'war torn' countries have you PERSONALLY accommodated then in your own property, along with feeding, clothing and paying all their expenses?

And how many BRITISH homeless citizens are you currently accommodating and paying for, given your 'moral' and 'humanitarian' outlook?

We look forward to reading of the comprehensive and compassionate example that you have already set. I'm sure we all also hope that none of your proposed new intake turn out to be some of the psychopathic beheading and rapist ISIL butchers of the type they have pledged to send here via the refugee/migrant route. I mean, that would be just plain awful wouldn't it?

So he is prepared to stand by his principles...enough for me

This is a decision for our government not individuals anyway

Found it drab, utterly depressing. I went to my local theatre to watch it in my teens many moons ago and loved it then. This adaption was dismal - just show the version with alistair sim. But they would rather schedule that at 6am on a saturday morning instead of prime time.

The perfect play to celebrate St Corbyn day.

I saw that. I thought the critics were a bit harsh on John Inmans portrayal of the patriarch factory owner though!

Always think the play has a passing nod to dickens'christmas carol',this adaptation didnt have the same spookiness as the alastair sim one but thought stott & richardson were terrific.
