Many (including myself) have been saying that for ages, long before this.
I'm no fan of either, that's for sure, but in this case it's easily the least bad option.

Years ago the christians and so on in Syria were saying Assad was the only thing stopping the lunatics from slaughtering them, even before IS existed, nobody listened.

Assad has always been close to the Shia regime in Iran. Russia has a Southern border with Iran which until recently was considered a pariah state by the West. It therefore makes political sense for Russia to remain buddies with both Assad and Iran who in turn both hate the Sunni insurgents, ISIS and the Syrian rebels.
