Brendan Foster says Mo Farah. But a bit too biased and carried away in the moment for me.

Is running around a track really that great an achievement regardless of physical and mental strength, surely it should go to someone who has achieved something that requires an element of skill as well as physical/mental attributes, I would say the likes of Andy Murray, Daley Thomson and Ronnie O'sullivan are greater and more talented. Maybe even Steve Redgrave who has won 5 golds in 5 different Olympics which is better than winning two at your home event.

Other contenders may be

Ian Botham
Chris Froome
Johnny Wilkinson
Nick Faldo

Personally I would say Murray, winning two slams in the hardest era in Tennis history against the World Number 1, I think more credence should be given to  more technical sports rather than endurance sports. Farah wouldn't be in my top 3 tbh.

In terms of numbers, you can't touch Phil Taylor.

Because basically, it's impossible to compare sport to sport.

Andy Murray would be a long way down my list. Good yes, but not a great.

As a complete sportsman, Max Woosnam.

Won an Olympic gold.
Won a title at Wimbledon and a Davis Cup captain.
Has a 147 break in snooker.
Scored a century at Lords in cricket.
Captain of England football team.

Among others.

Was only recently I came across him - can't remember why; but a bit like you, I had to look it up to believe it. My favourite bit is beating Charlie Chaplin at table tennis using a knife as a bat!

He's not British he's Somalian.

He just got help when he got to London, illegal, help.

My favourite cartoon from the Olympics was the two old lads in the pub saying " wasn't it great watching Mo Farah beating off all them Africans "

If we are ruling out runners, then probably cyclists and rowers should be excluded as well. Conversely, if we can include runners, then perhaps Coe and Ovett or Paula Radcliffe were more dominant in their events.

Football -- Bobby Moore? The world's leading central defender in his day, and one of the best of all time.

Andy Murray's a contender. Third-best tennis player in the world and certainly the best home player ever.

bit like asking who was the britain who could stick his finger up his arse the furthest. it's 50 percent genetics and 50 percent mindlessly pursuing a pointless task. mostly done for ego, fame or cash, not much that could be described as courageous or selfless.

Daley Thompson right up there too. Supreme in 10 events. If you look at Daley's WR, the current WR set by Ashton Eaton is only 300pts above Daley's mark set in 1984, & he used to stroll round in the 1500metres having already wrapped up gold Cool

@johnnyrant -- Daley was not supreme in 10 events: he was supreme in the decathlon but a bit below top class in any of its components. Double Olympic gold medallist and world record holder, mind, so certainly a contender, along with footballer/cricketers like CB Fry, for all-rounder.

Does motor racing count? Probably not but if it did, Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and Lewis Hamilton would be up there.

However great your achievements are in sports like darts and snooker im not sure those sports can provide the country withits greatest sportsman primarily because they are only competing against other brits.

Daily Thompson is the greatest for me. To be the best for so long was a tremendous achievement.

Its definitely not farah. He's nowhere near any world records

The marathon is a lot bigger in Africa now, ££££'s for the big city events. So you get 20year olds going straight to it rather than faffing round with farah on the track.

I despise the guy but Lewis Hamilton must be up there. Although boring F1 is huge and he'll soon be a triple world champion.

Came from a working class family and when his new contract kicks in will be earning £30million+ a year
