Love Thy Neighbour wasn't very sophisticated, but did a way better job than the Garnett sitcoms of making bigotry look ignorant and supporters of both the Labour Party (the white neighbour) and the Tories (the black neighbour) appear deluded. Garnett was a hero to far too many people. The satire just washed over them. Absolutely nobody could watch the bickering blokes and their exasperated wives in Love Thy Neighbour and applaud them. |

If it washed over them then that’s their problem. Watching Alf get seething angry about stuff was well funny. Loved his distorted logic too.

Don't get me wrong. I love Till Death... and the way Johnny Speight illustrated the lunacy of bigots when you give them free rein to explain themselves.
The trouble was, with most viewers at the time hailing Alf as a spokesman for common sense, it wasn't "their problem". Instead it was anyone who could be pigeonholed into a minority by Alf's logic who faced the problems. |
