@rob_dylan -- Dads army apart everything croft and perry did was dire.
Even in sitcoms, the quality of acting matters, and Dads Army had both Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier in the main parts to help on that front. Take them out and you're left with an awful lot of unfunny slapstick from Corporal Jones.
That said, Allo Allo and Are You Being Served? were Croft and Lloyd, not Perry. (From wikipedia) Croft and Perry wrote Dads Army, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Hi De Hi, and You Rang M'Lord. Croft and Lloyd wrote the two already condemned and several I really can't remember at all. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Croft_(TV_producer)#Written_with_Jeremy_Lloyd

I give you...... 'The Upper Hand'. Desperate vehicle for Joe McGann, remember him? Presumably Honor Blackman was in it purely for the money? As a student we used to be glued to it, as much hilarity could be taken from the canned laughter which tended to bear no relation to anything that was happening on the screen. How could it? Nothing funny ever happened, ever.

I'm with cardifffc here, Last of the Summer Wine was surely the most painful long runner.
Only ever seen it a couple of times and the hilarity appeared to revolve around someone old being pushed down a Yorkshire lane in a shopping trolley / whhelchair / out of control bike etc, whilst some more old people ran after him waving their arms around...

Four years on and I still can't forget the terrible Royal Bodyguard with David Jason the viewing figures say it all: Episode 1 - 8.35 million by episode 5 it was down to 2.1 million. Why on earth the BBC released it on DVD I will never know.

I thought Desmonds was bad until they did a spin off, Porkpie, as that lasted just 12 episodes to the 71 of Desmonds then clearly Channel 4 thought the same.

Allo Allo is classic British farce. Some suspiciously foreign types on this thread imo.
Took a girl to see the stage version with the TV cast at the Whitehall Theatre one evening nearly 30 years ago, and it was probably the only date where she was actually happy.

Think you have just slated one of the best shows of its day. It was funny at the time same as Allo Allo,
Both the Germans and the French said they could never have made Allo Allo because of the war and were envious of us because we could make light hearted fun of the war

which is exactly the point, most sitcoms simply don't stand the test of time - love thy neighbour, anybody?

Allo Allo was dire but saved by the occasional gratuitous sexy outfit close up Summer Wine has to be right down there, epitomised Sundays for me - the most boring day of the week by a country mile.

Currently working my way through my 'In Sickness & In Health' box set.

Love Thy Neighbour wasn't very sophisticated, but did a way better job than the Garnett sitcoms of making bigotry look ignorant and supporters of both the Labour Party (the white neighbour) and the Tories (the black neighbour) appear deluded.
Garnett was a hero to far too many people. The satire just washed over them. Absolutely nobody could watch the bickering blokes and their exasperated wives in Love Thy Neighbour and applaud them.

Don't get me wrong. I love Till Death... and the way Johnny Speight illustrated the lunacy of bigots when you give them free rein to explain themselves.
The trouble was, with most viewers at the time hailing Alf as a spokesman for common sense, it wasn't "their problem". Instead it was anyone who could be pigeonholed into a minority by Alf's logic who faced the problems.

Men behaving badly. Totally unfunny. The only remotely good thing about it was Lesley Ash. Dead heat with Miranda. Big bird falls over and shows her arse. Surely only funny to big birds who fall over and show their arses?

Comedy is subjective, I thought it was brilliant.
