The way the media uses the term 'migrants' annoys me.

A migrant is someone who follows due process to pass from one country to another.

A criminal is someone who breaks into a lorry to covertly cross a border.

It's another nail in the EU experiment. Passports not required to travel from Italy to France. Thankfully we still insist on them for people coming here.

Those that check the lorries on either side of the tunnel or ferry are mainly agency workers wearing UK Border force hi vis vests,a lot of this is down to constant government cuts in border force personnel and the governments attitude to loss of revenue from tobacco sales in the UK,IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY. I'm a frequent traveler between the UK and France and have witnessed the lax attitude towards European travelers and spoken with UK border force officers who have told me of the quotas they are expected to achieve from UK citizens shopping abroad,I defy any of you to travel to Belgium or France and tell a customs officer you have been shopping and see how long your detained and questioned for.

2 Nice French islands to put them on, near Normandy;
Chausey (French pronunciation: [ʃo.zɛ]) is a group of small islands, islets and rocks off the coast of Normandy, in the English Channel (La Manche).
It lies 17 kilometres (11 mi) from Granville, and forms a quartier of the Granville commune, in the Manche département.
Chausey forms part of the Channel Islands from a geographical point of view, but because it is under French jurisdiction it is almost never mentioned in the context of the other Channel Islands.
There are no scheduled transport links between Chausey and the other Channel Islands, although between two and four daily shuttles link Chausey to mainland France, depending on the season.

Grande-Île is the largest of the islands of Chausey located near the Channel Islands off the coast of Normandy in France.
The island is 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) long and 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi) wide at its widest being approximately 45 hectares (110 acres) in area.
It has a population of 30.

Surely there's middle ground here the size of the ex-Soviet Union.

We obviously don't want to let lots of illegal immigrants into our country, and we obviously shouldn't shoot or maim them. Also, Cameron's saying "swarm" is an utter non-issue.

May I suggest that:

1. If migrants really enjoy better benefits here than in mainland Europe, they should be reduced.

2. Um, the US has to patrol a border with Mexico that is over 3000 kilometres long. We have to keep an eye on one tunnel. We should just hire more people to do it and also help the French build better fences on their side. It's only one tunnel ffs, so it's easier for us than for any other European country.

They phoned him one day and told him that if he didnt pay them $200 a month from then on, they would kill his wife and baby daughter. This was no idle threat, at that time San Salvador was the most violent city on the planet.

He went to the police station where a helpful policeman told him not to report it because "many of the cops working here are in on it, if you report it you´re dead".

Im talking about a guy who had no job, no money and certainly no way to pay the $200 (which would undoubtably increase had he paid it).

So, he fled the country.Made the very, and i mean very dangerous journey to New York, through Guatemala and Mexico.

Sooner or later people caught up in this mess will get killed. The sh*t will really hit the fan if one of these illegals commits a heinous crime whilst here. We have enough criminals already..

Having been to 4 very poor Africa nations I have every sympathy for their plight. I had a teacher in Ethiopia beg me to take his son back with me to England. Across Africa, farming is often up to a 1000 years behind the rest of the world.....The reasons for that are complicated but very solvable.

Still can't work out why if I was to pull a fence down or enter a private property area I would be fined for criminal damage or prosecuted for illegal entry; these people just get sent back to try again Crazy

Just came home after a long drive tonight & had radio 5 live on all night. You wouldn't believe the long list of cretins they have had on regarding Calais.

Guest after guest, with their posh accents telling us all how this country is a disgrace and should allow these poor souls into the country and look after them.

Too many people in the country already regardless of colour race or religeon. It's claustrophobic and the roads, health service, police and housing can't cope.
Someone said above about sending the immigrants back to their home country. The immigrants destroy all personal papers so there is no way of telling where they are from.

Questions have been raised about Britain's response to the crisis, with some arguing the UK's labour laws are to blame for the growing number of migrants trying to cross the Channel.

Former French employment minister Xavier Bertrand, who is running for mayor in the Calais region, told Sky News: "They (migrants) don't want to stay in Calais.

"They want to go to England to find a job because they know it is possible to work without an identity card.

"In England, you have to change your policy."

It’s been pointed out time and again by the French and others that Britain, is going over and above what is legally required when it comes to benefits, for asylum seekers and economic improvers.
Maybe if we did things the French way none of this mess would have happened, time to harmonise our policy with the French.
