Must have been ITV.....our TV was usually on BBC

Yes, Thames TV - Euston films (Minder and Sweeney) wanted to chuck more money at Public Eye in 1975, but Alfred Burke didn't want to continue.
Does this sound familiar? "Just one more thing..." Frank Marker says, and he wears a shabby raincoat - I was wondering if it pre-dates Columbo... |

I recall a mug with "Frank" on for some reason
|
|
By:
Yes!
That's right, - the "F" wears off and the mug says "rank", ounf... ![]() Marker usually drinks his tea with a ginger snap or, if he's in work, a nice bit o'shortbread, a luxury item in 1973. Nell Holdsworth, the lovely antique dealer with the "agreeable disposition" usually visits Marker for tea and a chat. |

Kenny Mann would surely like the episode, "Mrs. Podmore's Cat" in which Frank Marker the ENQUIRY AGENT, is paid to take care of a pure black house-cat for a week while Mrs. Podmore visits a health farm.

I used to watch television and Public Eye was a favourite of mine. A superb show and the music was great .
|

By:
Velasquez, both go back to the detective in Les Diaboliques - Henri George Clouzot.
|
|
By:
Ta, Dunlaying - I've got that but have never watched it...yes, the theme music is great...arranged by "Uncle Bob Sharples" from Opportunity Knocks...he used a pseudonym.
Watched another one last night...The Bankrupt...posh con-man (in court) names a horse he backed - stuck £1000 on it - Marker does some research and finds out the horse opened at 20/1 but didn't move much in the betting...£1000 would have done some damage at a minor track in 1970...hence, porkies being told... ![]() |

My parents loved Public Eye. Just watched an episode really interesting to see how tv drama has changed.
Another favourite was Budgie with Adam Faith and Ian Cuthbertson as Charlie Endell. |
|
By:
'Budgie' was indeed superb.
|
|
By:
ah thanks ramruma, all 3 named above were superb
|
|
By:
Saw a few Charlie Endell episodes recently, in the spin-off STV series, but it wasn't as good as Budgie.

The box set A Box Named Frank is only 28 quid from Amazon .
It contains 46 episodes . Other great shows going for a song include ; Edge Of Darkness Undermined, 1965 The Singing Detective , Michael Gambon The Hanged Man , Colin Blakely |

By:
Missed the first few episodes is there a way to catch up ?
thanks |
|
By:
At the moment they seem to be showing from Series 3 (?) onwards, and not the very beginning.
|
|
By:
Enjoying this series which was completely new to me.
Jim Bergerac's screen ex-wife turned up yesterday evening in a mini dress which even by 60s standards barely covered her pert derriere. |
|
By:
The best episodes are still to come Alun. The colour ones when Marker moves to Windsor and sets up his own agency.
|
|
By:
I thought that was set in Birmingham.
There you go, white flight again. |
|
By:
If my memory is correct, he left Brighton to Birmingham and on finally to Windsor.

I’ve watched around 10 of these ‘PUBLIC EYE’ episodes now, dating from the mid to late 60s.
Who would have thought there was a time when British TV dramas concentrated on script, plot, characterisation, dialogue and performance? None of the episodes to date have involved : (a) A completely contrived storyline set up purely to persuade the viewer that ‘white people are generally intolerant backward racists’ (b) A storyline into which ethnic minority characters have been parachuted just for the sake of being ‘inclusive’ (c) A storyline where those pesky white people are once again discriminating against people who follow Peaceful Religions. (d) The worship of “Trans” characters. Perhaps the individuals who green-light TV dramas in 2018 and beyond might do well to learn from dramas such as ‘Public Eye’. |

Velasquez 26 Jul 15 20:20 Joined: 30 Aug 02 | Topic/replies: 9,623 | Blogger: Velasquez's blog Kenny Mann would surely like the episode, "Mrs. Podmore's Cat" in which Frank Marker the ENQUIRY AGENT, is paid to take care of a pure black house-cat for a week while Mrs. Podmore visits a health farm. Thank you Vel'. I'll look out for that one. As mentioned these are being repeated on Talking Pictures at the moment. The current series is from 1969, and the colour is of a crystal clear quality almost. Hard to realise when watching, that a fresh faced 35 year old will be 84 now if still around. Good series. Next episode, seems to have moved on 2 years. Mon 22 Oct 18 20:00 Public Eye 1971. Detective & Mystery Drama. Well, There Was This Girl, You See. Stars Susan Brodrick, Alfred Burke & Brenda Cavendish. Things are looking up when Marker is invited to join an enquiry agency. |

A lot of the early episodes, like Callan, were lost and TP are showing all the surviving episodes. That is why there is a gap Alun. Tape was quite expensive in the 60s and they reused a lot of the tapes, taping over some classic programmes.

Bought the Budgie and Public Eye box sets on the back of this thread.
Budgie -- good though got a bit silly towards the end. Apparently (according to one of the DVD extras) it was originally going to be called Loser. A charming, handsome, petty thief in over his head but too stupid to realise it. Brought back a vague nostalgia for the old Soho: a terrible place, really, with the sordid dirty book shops, rip-off clip joints and half the Met on the payroll. Public Eye -- might save for Christmas (or November, whichever comes first). |
