Profit and Loss First of a two-part documentary. Historian David Olusoga explores the archive records of Britain's 46,000 slave owners and discovers a surprising range of people who owned slaves, including clergymen and shopkeepers.

The compensation records reveal how the government of the day paid £17billion in today's money to slave owners following abolition of slavery in 1834, while the 800,000 registered slaves received nothing.

David also visits Barbados and traces how Britain's slave economy emerged in the 17th century, and in Jamaica he reads from the diaries of a notorious slave owner

Bad bad British....... we should all hang our heads in shame.

As David Olusoga told us in a different documentary, black Africans and Asians won the first & second world wars for us.

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron’s ancestors were among those who received billions of pounds in compensation after slavery was abolished, a study has claimed.

The previously unseen records show exactly who received what in payouts from the Government when slave ownership was abolished by Britain in 1833.

Dr Nick Draper from University College London (UCL), who led the study, says as many as one-fifth of wealthy Victorian Britons derived all or part of their fortunes from slavery.

The records show that Mr Cameron’s first cousin six times removed, General Sir James Duff, an army officer and MP for Banffshire, was awarded £4,101, equal to more than £3m today, to compensate him for the 202 slaves he forfeited on the Grange Sugar Estate in Jamaica.

Mr Cameron declined to comment after a request was made to the No 10 press office, The Independent said.

Slave brutality and Derby's dose[edit]
Accordingly, Thistlewood routinely punished his slaves with fierce floggings and other harsh punishments, some of them very sickening. One of his preferred punishments was the "Derby's dose" in which a slave would be forced to defecate into an offending slave's mouth which would then be forced shut via various methods for a considerable number of hours.

it also must be mentioned is wasn't just white slave traders who made lots of money, black Africans selling the slaves to the slave owners/traders made plenty of money too.

Though this for some reason doesn't really get mentioned, im not sure why.

Their profit was much smaller than that made by the British Aristocracy

Stronger tribes in Africa viewed other weaker tribes as fair game to be sold on as slaves to the Europeans

In the 1650s Anthony Johnson, who was African, won a court case that let him keep another African, John Casor, as his slave instead of ending his indentured servitude.

This meant that the first legally recognized owner of a permanent slave in America, was a black man.

that's true the leopard, was less money made, but it is a valid point when a lot of people of African descent claim they are victims of the slave trade just because of their colour, when some of their ancestors could have themselves been slave traders.

The slave trade is truly a shameful mark against humanity Sad

I should imagine that if I or other Englishmen go back into our own family histories we will find great iniquities. Thankfully I am master of my own ship and I don't expect someone else to provide me with a free meal ticket. That is because the future is as yet undiscovered and so the most fertile land. All I need to do is plough. So why should I shake the begging bowl expecting someone else to fill it? I shouldn't and I won't. The past is a different country. They do things differently there. Descendants of slaves in this country should thank their lucky stars they were born here. This is the land of Keats, Newton, Hawking et al. They won the lottery of life. What need of they of the begging bowl which impoverishes them morally and intellectually?

And what needed they who received such vast compensation back then for losing their right to "own" their fellow human beings EO? It wouldn't a begging bowl that was being held out, simply a justifiable call for fair treatment but, as you've shown time and again in other posts, your mind is too dull to appreciate such subtle distinctions - and they're not even that subtle to be honest. I don't wonder you gave up on your law studies.

Gave up sir? Gave up? You impertinent wretch. Such is my modesty that I wouldn't dream of informing you that not only did I complete all academic studies for Call to the Bar but I did so with only one eye on said studies. That may be the height of folly, a mark of arrogance or the work of the gifted. I know not which but I do know that not only was it completed but that it was, as our cousins across the pond would say, a breeze.

A for the issue at hand may I remind you that, as I said, the past is a different country. We can argue whether slave owners should have been compensated. I say not. We cannot argue about whether the past is a foreign country where they did things differently because they did. It is also the case that the sins of the father should not be visited on the son and in this case the great, great grandsons.

Nobody alive today suffered from slavery so pray tell what is it you want to compensate them for exactly?

Why do so few mention we banned slavery in 1834 ish??   and our navy went round enforcing it.  Strange that.

Why is this surprising?

A couple of years back, we marked the abolition of slavery.

Well, in order to be abolished, slavery surely had to exist. So why is this news?

German debts were officially forgiven after the war. Ironically, Germany now insists Greece must pay its debts in full, but then fiddling your Eurozone figures is far more serious than killing millions of people.

Everyone alive is descended from slaves and emperors if you go back far enough.

Actually , regarding British descendants of African slaves, there might be more white people in Britain that have a black slave ancestor than black British.

When slavery was abolished here in 1807 there were 30,000 blacks in the country. 8 generations on they must have millions of white descendants .

White people were smarter before they owned slaves.

If they weren't, perhaps africans would have taken thousands of uneducated whites as slaves back to africa, if they could have built boats large enough, which was unlikely, given the problems they seem to have today trying to cross the Med. to Europe.
