Only 2 hours until closest approach but it will take a year to send back all the data. This is pretty special.

Nothing much happening at closest approach. New Horizons is pointing at Pluto and doing all it's science, while it does that it's antenna is pointed away from Earth.

...another incredible achievment.......

...3 billion miles over 9 years and they get it right on the spot..........

....just goes to show that mathematics really is the language of the universe.........works on this planet and can be applied throughout the universe.....

....and the even managed to find room to fit the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh.......the discoverer of Pluto on the probe....

Amazing.

Incredible that they spent all that money on this while hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, have no jobs.

Stupid Earthlings can't even get a man to Mars, which is our only hope for survival when the Sun goes out, never mind looking at Pluto.

Mars is in the solar system......would not be habitable when the Sun goes out.

When the Sun dies and its mass expands, Mercury and Venus will get absorbed. It could stop short of Earth, but the lower temperature will still roast Earth, killing all life on the surface.

Mars is the only chance for survival.

Jupiter is gas, and too far away even if it was habitable.

......and I might add....

...that long long long before the sun goes out.....we would have f?cked the precious Eco sytsem of this planet .....

...by the actions of the majority of this planets population through their ignorance......insensensitivity to the natural world and general short sightedness...

To survive longterm we will have to travel to other habitable planets in other star systems

And you gained that by reading about it on the internet.

The same as me.

But we obviously read different articles.

Now prove that the one I read was drivel, and the one that you read wasn't.

..you have got to be kidding........I'm sure your fishing but in case you are not....

...it's called a decent education coupled with common sense and independent thought spelling.....

.....so the sun is dying....and starting to expand........and all of a sudden  the sun develops a conscience and decides to disobey the laws of physics and stops short of the planet that us oh so important humans have decided to inhabit!!!!!

..really??

Most of the money spent on these missions is not spent in space but here on Earth by the Men and Women who work on them.

When the Sun expands it will also destroy any atmosphere on Mars. A star spends 100 million years in the Red Giant phase compared to the 10 billion years of it's overall lifetime but it's a very unstable phase of it's lifetime. Betelgeuse in Orion varies in magnitude over the years. It's not a good time to be in the Solar System.

Get your 'decent education' to get you to type in correct English, and also stop putting full stops everywhere.

So you calculated the Sun's mass, and how much it will expand when it eventually dies?

I didn't.

I read a scientific view, not a Betfair forumite's view.

The scientific view I read was that it will pass Venus, but stop short of Earth.

Your view that I think the Sun 'has a conscience, and will stop short of the only planet we inhabit', is moronic.

Everything pn the surface will be dead long before it gets anywhere near Earth.

So it suddenly 'lost it's conscience'?

..ok spelling......

.let me suspend my disbelief for a second......let's assume your version of physics applies......

...you do realise that even if the dying sun stops short of earth.   ..it will still be a little closer.....and still quite f@cking hot.

Are you in need of spectacles, renge?

It's not my view on physics.

Try reading what I type.

I clearly stated that I read a scientific view, and suggested we had read views that didn't agree.

You said you didn't, you had a 'decent education' and had worked it out for yourself.

I'd rather believe a scientific view than the view of an anonymous  Betfair forumite, who wasted a lot of his time trying to wind up Sundancekid on here.

...you do realise that even if the dying sun stops short of earth.   ..it will still be a little closer.....and still quite f@cking hot.

No need to swear, it won't proves you're smarter than the scientific view that I read.

And just to prove that you don't read what I posted, I've already said that all life on Earth will have been destroyed long before it got here.

..first of all....whatever you read......wasn't scientific.......

...and second..you said we would have to relocate to Mars and it was the only chance we had when the sun goes out...

....and has leapord points out......if the sun goes out...it goes out on Mars...as well as everywhere on our solar system.

...what are we going to do do for light......light a few matches in the vacuum of space!!!

From what I read, the Sun wont go 'out' for billions of years after it's mass has expanded. There will still be light on Mars.

In the end, all energy will have been used up by all suns, and the universe will cease to exist as we know it.

Not worth struggling.

Jeez......a thread on an incredibly exciting subject descends into a depressing argument with two people who are speaking a different language......
