...the whole situation has arisen from an egotistical political construct .....and in the process has undermined and diluted democracy right across Europe...(maybe this was the long term aim)

...the ridiculous nature of this can best be summed up by a date.....july 20...

..this act of the drama has been about negotiating in order for Greece to get a final tranche of 7.2 billion euros bailout released from Europe...part of which (1.5 billion) will go toward paying the IMF on
30 June.

..but the next act...(in fact the curtain call if you like) will take place on July 20....when....3.5 billion euros has to be repaid to.....yes...you guessed it...back to the European Central Bank....the very people they are getting the 7.2 billion from this time!!!!

Robbing Peter to pay Paul doesn't even come close....

OH...lets not forget the the 3.2 billion that's owed to the ECB in August.....

woooppsss.

its obvious to anyone that in an all terminolgoy Greek is Bankrupt - it will have no more money and should rely on real charitable handouts - food , clothing etc to those desperate - there is no other way ... but as the OP its just a political game thats got well out of hand.

I still think that Portsmouth FC managing to accrue a £138 million debt a few years back was perhaps even more of a bizarre accomplishment, considering they are a tiny and insignificant blot in comparison with a country that historically gave the world quite a lot.

July  3.5 billion

name chance

why would Greece pay 1.5 billion, when they can't make next payment July?
Report brendanuk1 June 29, 2015 8:56 PM BST
20th july is the date they cant dodge. IMF will wait for their 1.5bn tomorrow and maybe negotiations will open again once troika realise Greece will pull the trigger on the debt

Is that 280 billion number correct? I read the other day it was 18.927 billion

My two minute calculations on the Greek debt, with the 18.927 billion number :-

18,927 million, or 1720 Euros for each and everyone of the ca. 11 million Greeks. They have unemployment at over 25%, so the working population might be as low as 35-40%. This would equate to 2,400 Euros per working person in Greece.

The population of the European union is 503 million. So that's 37 Euros for every single person in the European union, or perhaps 75 Euros for every single working person in the European union.
Report Stow_judge June 30, 2015 1:38 PM BST
If it's 280 billion for 11 million, I think that comes to 25.4K per person or ca. 67.8K per working person Shocked

Greece, which may default on an International Monetary Fund debt repayment due on Tuesday after talks with creditors broke down, owes its official lenders 242.8 billion euros ($271 billion), according to a Reuters calculation based on official data, with Germany by far the largest creditor.

Who would have thought that a "progressive" and "forward-thinking" Socialist government elected to sort out Greece's basket case debts would ask for billions of pounds of other people's money?

Just another 29 billion on the slate please.

Costs us nearly £60 billion a year in debt interest! The "deficit" is a mere bauble in comparison to the National Debt.

2013

UK GDP 2.678 trillion USD
GREECE 242.2 billion USD

so UKs debt it 60% and Greece is 110%+

UK's economy is about 89,000,000x better than Greece
Report bodil July 1, 2015 1:10 AM BST
It you add in all the debt the UK government doesn't (mostly unfunded public sector pensions, pfi ****, etc ...) ,we owe far more per capita than Greece.  Why aren't we running around screaming hysterically?  Because we're ignorant and still believe.  Once people start to not believe in money/currency(pretty much a Ponzi scheme) - then it all caves in.  But why should we do that?  That would be bad and damaging, so we wont.  Relax, unless you're Greek.
