Here's 2 sayings that I hear way too often.

"I'm not being funny but...." Usually followed by a controversial statement. It's like the 'I'm not being funny' part gives them license to say what they want.

"I'm not going to lie" I really don't understand this. I hear it a lot.

"I'm not racist but....."

....then they say something racist.

The worst example that I have ever heard of this was about 15 years ago - I got talking to the English owner of a small bar we we had stopped at in Portugal when he came out with the following:

"I'm not racist or 'owt, but I hate those fookin' P@kis"!! Shocked

Hardly current, those stupid phrases were being used 20 years ago ,when I was in business. In seminars we'd construct a bingo card with all the phrase on them, and tick the appropriate box whenever on was uttered by a speaker. The winner had to promise to shout ' House' when his card was filled. Laugh

Agree with the ' yes no absolutely ' . But this is being picked up in parody by the BBC in comedy programmes like W1A.

Bit like the ' Super ' and ' Great ' from the excellent Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin days.Laugh

I apologise "unreservedly". Usually confined to MP's or highly placed Council officials caught fiddling their expenses. By and large seems to get them off the hook. Shame I didn't think of it recently when stopped for speeding. Might have avoided the £100 and 3 points otherwise (could also have avoided it of course by keeping to the speed limit).

As mentioned by others, "absolutely" is appalling. "Yes" should suffice. It's the unnecessary emphasis that's so annoying. AB-so-LUTELY".

"So" at the start of a sentence merits nothing less than an appointment with Albert Pierrepoint, were such a thing possible.
