All taxis and private hire vehicles could be made to install CCTV equipment recording audio and video.

An independent report said that abusers in Rotherham used taxis to traffic victims.

Not everybody, it seems, is happy about this.

In consultation on the changes 118 of the 455 responses agreed that vehicles should be fitted with video recording CCTV.

On the other hand, 337 out of the 455 didn't.

Are they mad, or afraid of an 'infringement of civil liberties'?

What have they got to hide?

The proposal seems to be that taxi drivers pay for this kit themselves.

Well there's a surprise.

Taxi drivers in Rotherham are going to take strike action as they don't want CCTV cameras fitted.

You'd think that it would be handy if CCTV cameras could exonerate you if there were false allegations.

Strange lot - cab drivers.

Unless there is a Police inquiry the footage will probably never be seen. And the Yorkshire police aint got the best of records in that respect.

What are the legal requirements for a taxi licence? And in the light of recent events is it time to bring the background checks in line with say teaching, and introduce periodic checks by a new body to monitor the quality of taxi drivers and taxi firms in all towns and cities.

Could be wrong but wasn't the allegation that the cabs were ferrying victims to their abusers, not that the drivers were raping the girls in the back seat? And that this was part of wider criminal activity including drugs, prostitution and protection.

Maybe cctv will help but it smacks of a knee-jerk reaction. What Sir Humphrey called the politician's syllogism: we must do something; this is something; therefore, we must do this. This, in this case, being cctv in cabs.

You know the drivers were nonces.

At very least you should have a permit and go through rigorous checks in order to carry unaccompanied children in a taxi/bus

And anybody else, for that matter!
