A lot of money is spent restoring heritage buildings and monuments, the proposed work on the A 303 running past Stonehenge which will divert it through a tunnel past the monument is estimated  at £2 billion.
When you compare the restoration costs with the cost of the Olympics and the Millennium Dome it doesn't seem quite so outrageous.
