Mo Farah missed two drugs tests a year before the London 2012 Olympics, Sportsmail can reveal.

At a time when the British distance runner’s controversial American coach Alberto Salazar and training partner Galen Rupp are facing a series of allegations, Farah’s own problems with the doping authorities reached a peak only a few months after he started training under Salazar in February 2011. The two missed tests put his participation at the 2012 Olympics, where he won two gold medals, at risk.

But the second test seems to have been scheduled once Farah started working with Salazar. It should have taken place at Farah’s home in Teddington, London, but the athlete appealed to the UK Anti-Doping Agency, claiming that he did not hear his doorbell.

Farah is alleged to have claimed he did not hear the doorbell when testers arrived and his agent Ricky Simms submitted video evidence filmed inside the house in which he tried to show that the bell could not be heard from the bedroom. Silly

Serena Williams once hid in her panic room when a tester arrived - claiming she thought he was an intruder.

Miss 3 tests in 12 months and you're sanctioned - but after that 12 months the counter resets to zero.

Have a family member who is single and sometimes I worry about them when they don't answer the door. Start off knocking the door, then giving it a bit of harder knock. Then go round the back and try the back door. Then I give the downstairs windows a bit of a knock. If that doesn't work I shout through the letter box. Last option is to get a few wee stones and throw them up against the bedroom window where he might be sleeping off a drinking binge.

Just knocking the front door of what is probably a big house Farah lives in seems a bit easy for the athlete to say he missed the call.

Report Ted Brogan June 18, 2015 9:13 AM BST
I have no idea whether Mo is a drugs cheat or not, nor do I care too much, but the way that the press can just constantly imply that he is a cheat without presenting any actual evidence and then stick in one line that says something like 'although there is no suggestion that Mo cheated' really p1sses me off.

If they think he did it (which they clearly do), then how about they present some evidence, instead of just slandering him constantly

I agree with you Ted. That's the forums duty.
Report Dr Crippen June 18, 2015 9:35 AM BST
According to the rules as I understand them.
The athlete has to tell the authorities where they will be for hour on a certain day.

The excuse that the athlete could not hear the doorbell from the bedroom cannot be used as an excuse. Because the athlete is obliged to make themselves available for the test.

By not answering the doorbell the athlete did not make themselves available for the test. Even if they couldn't hear the doorbell from the bedroom.
That's their problem, they knew exactly which hour the testers would be be coming.
I'd mark that down as a failure to give a sample.

it's the Rio Ferdinand scenario but didn't he miss 3?
Report Degs June 18, 2015 10:03 AM BST
As far as I remember, Ferdinand was told at the training ground to give a sample, but left without doing so. I think it was viewed as deliberately avoiding the test rather than for any other reason.

Athletes are required to tell testers where they will be for 1 hour each day. They do not know which day they will be tested and I don't think they are given any notice.
If what the Mail says is right, as it appears, then yes, Farah missed 2 tests, but that's not enough to warrant a ban under current rules.

It's handy too for Mo to be able to fly 'home' to America when the heat is on locally.
Report Ramruma June 18, 2015 10:46 AM BST
It's probably a bigger story in America, given US athletes are involved, and that country still has journalists who investigate stuff rather than just reprinting press releases.
Report jed.davison June 18, 2015 10:59 AM BST
Anyone who knows anything about track and field would have been suspicious of Farah's progress post-2011, given his improved times and the way he suddenly was able to see out his races a thousand times better than he had before. It beggars belief that he could train under Salazar and not be aware of the rumours which have been circulating for decades about his coach, not only during his coaching career but also when he was competing.

It is unlikely, just as it was with Florence Griffiths and just as it was with Ben Johnson and Linford Christie, that an athlete who has consistently fallen short at the highest level can suddenly - at 28 - find the improvement necessary to dominate an ultra-competitive discipline.

Each national federation should publish a database of all missed tests, with given excuses, just as it does all doping positives. I'll wager there isn't a top Jamaican sprinter alive today, or even a Russian, who hasn't availed of the two-strikes loophole at least once during their careers.

jed.davison - agree with all your comments.

He seems a nice genuine guy, but Mo Farah appears to be saying and doing the wrong things since these recent  allegations about his coach. And now this dodgy claim that he never heard the doorbell when the testers arrived. As the Americans might say, it doesn't pass the smell test !  BUT there is still no actual evidence that he is a drug cheat, and I hope he is innocent, but things don't look good at the moment.

That's not how the system works. An athlete can theoretically be tested at any time of the year with no warning given whatsoever. A missed test can only be called if the athlete isn't available at the times he specifies he will be available, which covers just one hour in any given day.

^ Thanks for that explanation. So presumably when Mo Farah missed a test because he 'never heard the doorbell' he would have been tested anyway soon after missing that test (?) And if he was tested and was clear then this is a non-story.

I wouldn't exactly say its a non-story, but yes it's very likely Farah would have been tested anyway soon afterwards and several times each year. I dont know why the UK athletics doesn't give out the information but it would help if they did. Galen Rupp, the athlete at the centre of this storm, was tested a total of 40 times between 2010-2012. He was, of course, clean each time.

Report Eeternaloptimist June 18, 2015 3:50 PM BST
Who can say about Farah but his story is quite a bit different from someone like Christie who defied all logic. Sprinters tend to peak very early usually in their early to mid 20's. Christie started beating the best in the world in his 30's after knocking on the door for many years. Longer distance runners tend to peak in their late 20's. Farah had been posting world class performances since his early 20's but had lacked consistency. Even so the list of his achievements is a long one prior to him starting with Salazar and his win in the world championships of 2011 came after he'd only been with Salazar a short time and probably too soon for any shennanigans to take effect.

In short it is quite feasible that his prior quest for gradual improvements such as the benefits over time of moving to train at altitude following some of his breakthrough performances in his early 20's are what account for him proving to be the athlete he is.

Report Dr Crippen June 19, 2015 5:08 PM BST
When the drugs testers arrive to do the test, if they can't contact the athlete, they have to try again every fifteen minutes until the hour is up.

Then as an athlete suggested on radio4 this morning they should come back the next day with the same procedure in the next window they were given for that day.
Then if that fails again on the third day.
If all three attempts to test them have failed then that should be classed as three refusals to give a sample and the ban should then be automatic.

That bloke said that the authorities haven't really got their hearts in stamping out drug taking and they could tighten up their testing a lot.
Report Dr Crippen June 19, 2015 5:09 PM BST
