This has been a fascination of mine for many years now.

I just can't believe anyone could just shove a lobster in boiling hot water like it's no big deal???

I've watched loads of clips on YT of people doing it, and all they seem to care about is cooking it right so it tastes good.

Some people say they don't feel any pain. How do they know, were they a lobster in their previous life???

Barbaric imo.

But in fairness if you look into things in more detail very little of our meat or fish production is as humane as they have you believe.
For that reason i have two non meat days a week now.

Hopefully i will increase it further in the future ,

Oh yeah, you could go on for ages about lots of different animals getting brutally slaughtered. I just feel more affected by the thought of getting put in boiling water.

What about mussels? But at least the get boiled in white wine sometimes...Do mussels feel pain?
No sure but very tasty. Oysters on the other hand feel like phlem.
Shrimps get boiled alive on the boats.
Why boil a lobster alive when you can drive knife through its head first and do the deed?
So many things to consider with seafood...

it is supposed to be the swiftest way, you'll find fish breeders kill an ill fish in the same way

If a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.

You wouldn't be able to tell if this works with a lobster though as they can't jump.

Report minardi June 16, 2015 10:08 PM BST
well they say for humans better to die through cold than heat ... the brain closes down with hypothermia thats why you musnt fall asleep with hypothermia ... for heat in a dessert its dehydration and organ failure over several days not nice.

not so sure its alive AP ,its legs are moving but its  claws aint doing much, seems to be lifeless as soon as shell is broken from body  at the front

eating  crustaceans aint my  thing , reason they are alive on the kitchen  table is all about proving freshness ,although the Asians do have little respect for anything they are about to eat seafood is a bit diff.

in any case is it any diff from boiling shimps /prawns or snails , where do you draw the line with this stuff ?

you cant get any fresher seafood than alive i suppose ,its just perception ,we are living in a sterilized  here in the UK

If your a squeamish metro-sexual dont watch the below ,but this is harvesting a natural resource ,summit that is almost gone from the uk .

we are all  fckn doomed  here

I just can't believe how cruel some people are???
Report Pokermonster June 19, 2015 11:53 AM BST
It's truly depressing.  I like to believe that people are essentially kind at heart, but when it comes to animal cruelty we are either ignorant, apathetic to change, or simply in denial of the facts.  I wish I could do more personally to further the cause of vegetarianism / veganism, but most I chat to on the subject seem to have little interest.
Report sheppy123 June 19, 2015 1:13 PM BST
This is gonna sound like a real poor excuse, but I feel powerless to do anything about it.

If I stopped eating fish & meat or gave a lot of money to help prevent it, I just feel like it would do virtually nothing.

The KFC's are always busy, what difference would one less customer make???
Report Pokermonster June 19, 2015 1:22 PM BST
It will make a difference, sir.  And you'll gain the peace of mind of at least being true to your own sense of right and wrong.
Report sheppy123 June 19, 2015 1:28 PM BST

Being a meat eater shouldn't stop you from canvassing for more humane treatment for all animals whether in the food chain or not.
I've long accepted that cows, sheep and etc will always be reared for the food market but hopefully they will be treated well when living and humanely killed.
Report Just Checking June 19, 2015 8:22 PM BST
I sometimes wish that whole karma thing is true, and the people who do bad things to animals come back as animals and have simialrly bad things things done to them :)

I didn't see the original program but I saw a clip on gogglebox of some recent program from Korea I think it was where they steal pet dogs and cart them off and kill them for meat/fur I suppose. Even the little clips were enough. Stealing a pet from someones driveway and dragging it down the road by the neck on a motorbike.

They showed a little clip of a cage on a lorry full to the brim with live dogs on top of each other, made me want to go there and introduce a baseball bat on the driver.

Report sheppy123 June 19, 2015 8:38 PM BST
Great posts guys...

I haven't got a problem with animals being killed as long as it's done humanely, which as we know isn't always the case.

The likes of YouTube have really opened my eyes as to how badly animals are treated.

I also think along the lines of karma where you get what you deserve.

No one is saying its acceptible to boil a crustacean alive ,although i wonder how many would be man enough to kill it first ?

take the easy out and just fire into the pot ?

Kill your lobster and any other food before you cook it ,imo but we dont need to go all animal rights here ffs ,wishy washy lefty brigade have done enough damage without encouraging them

Cats are the big problem in UK ,killing all the sweet wee  tweet tweets by the million ,they need culled ,or teeth removed or a leg amputed to slow them down .

Why could the foxhunters not just tie a bell around the hounds neck and be allowed to continue like the bird killers ?

I got my Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall River Cottage Fish book out last night which actually I had never read before, many think he is a t0sser but he is a big conservationist and petitions animal rights and welfare.

He states "lobsters are less sophisticated creatures than crabs if you can imagine such a thing, and as such they do not have anything you could really call a brain. So the officially sanctioned way of killing them is less technical than it is for crabs, and involves no anatomical precision. They should simply be placed alive in a freezer for about 2 hours, until they are almost, but not quite, frozen - this will render them completely comatose. They can then be dropped into a pan of rapidly boiling seawater or saltwater."

They're certainly weird things, they actually p1ss from their head which is used to frighten off other males, and to attract females. When a female is ready to breed she moves in with the male and sheds her hard shell, this allows the male to climb aboard and impregnate her. Then when she is ready to leave she grows back the hard shell again, and she can carry the males fluid around inside her for a year until she decides to fertilize herself.
