Used to think banisters were just there for cosmetic purposes but now realise they are an essential part of getting up and down the stairs first thing in the morning
P.S. Seemed like only yesterday i used to leap up the stairs like a gazelle two steps at a time
On a serious note, a friend of mine tripped and fell down the last couple of steps and fractured his scapula. He needed an operation and one year on still has very limited mobility in that shoulder. Always have one hand free to hold the rail when using stairs.

Have you posted a link to that footie clip Kenny? BTW I fell down the last 3/4 stairs just over a week ago. Lay for a few secs thinking I must have broken something but nowt not even a twinge. Mind you us Scots are a hardy breed unlike you soft southerners.

I'm still pretty fit too Kenny, stairs are no problem but broken bones are no fun. Have done the same thing many years ago, just a bruised bum but scary when you can't stop.

More like well cushioned, due to all the porridge, haggis and deep fried "Mars-Bars"...

Went to pick up my E-Type and was going up exterior stairs to the office, and following the very pretty secretary.
Should have been paying attention to the stairs instead of her overwhelming charms!
I tripped and grabbed the metal hand rail, and bent my thumb backwards and out of joint.
Fighting back the tears, and trying to be a man, and with no option other than waiting for an ambulance, or pulling it as hard as I could, to get it back in place (has to be a joke there somewhere) I went with the second option.
The good news is that it worked, whilst she held on to me, and spontaneously kissed me, and I had her perfume with me all day.
Because it was weakened, I have knocked it out (another joke) twice since, and all these years later it still hurts.

A few weeks ago I was walking up some slabbed steps outside our house with loose 'slip on' slippers on and, as it was cold, had my hands in my jacket pockets.
My slipper caught on a tread and I tripped and forwards. I didn't have time to get my hands out of my pockets but managed to somehow land on my elbows, ripping the pocket of my jackets in the process.
My face was within a couple of inches of one of the top steps. I could very easily have broken my jaw and smashed my front teeth in. I was so lucky.

Very excuseable not to pay attention following a mini-skirted chick up the stairs in 1971.

Tempus fugit
In 1983/84 I lived on the 19th floor of a tower block. The lifts broke down and the wife couldn't get out with the pram to go shopping. She phoned me at work and gave me the list. I went to Sainsburys after work got the whole lot in about 6 bags full, walked home, then ran all the way up with the bags, wearing steel capped boots and wearing a thick sheepskin coat, and wasn't even breathing heavy at the top.
Can't even run up my flight of stairs at home now.

During college holidays one of my jobs was delivering vending ingredients.
Boxes of sugar weighed 30lbs, and I thought nothing of running up several flights of stairs, with three boxes at a time.
