Oscar Pistorius will be released on probation by 21 August after a recommendation from South Africa's correctional services department.
The Olympic athlete was jailed for five years in 2014 for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Under South African law he is eligible for release under "correctional supervision" having served a sixth of his sentence.
A state appeal against his acquittal on murder charges is due in November.
South African Commissioner of Correctional Services Zach Modise told the BBC that the case management committee at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria, where Pistorius is being held, made the recommendation last week.
The double amputee shot and killed Ms Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door at his Pretoria home, believing she was an intruder, he told his trial.
In March a Johannesburg court blocked his legal team's attempts to stop the prosecutors' appeal.

It's totally different in S Africa. A friend of an acquaitance of mine, both lived there, local villains broke in, they opened the safe when demanded at gun and knife point, not enough. Wanted to know where second safe was, they didn't have one but they cut bits off the bloke then killed him and slashed the missus. You defo shoot first in S Africa.

It was hardly worth putting him on trial. I'm amazed that a few British Human Rights Chancer Lawyers haven't as yet approached him re: making some sort of compensation claim for the dreadful inconvenience he's been put through. They'd probably land it too if they could get the case heard over here. He'd be wise to check if he has a British granny or something.

The initial verdict was a joke. This is the correct decision.

Apparently this won't go back to court until after Christmas, and in January he will be sentenced again, max he could get is 15 years. So continues under house arrest now.  But lawyers still likely to appeal against sending him back to prison.

The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years  not max

yep this judge was saying all the common sense things that people were saying on here like if you fire 4 shots through a door you're almost certainly gonna kill someone. where the hell was he first time around ?

the trial judge's interpretation of the evidence was absolutely ludicrous

Sad to see there is nowhere where a man can get rid of an unwanted partner nowadays
Women have a long reach

Still I did think his story a little unbelievable

It looks as if he might have to spend a little more time inside...he will just have to hope he does not get a top bunk this time

Oops,

Looks like the trial judge was taken in by all his acting and histrionics protesting his "regret and remorse" and forgot to apply the law.

To fire through that door, whether he thought it was his girlfriend or a burglar, was murder.

Indeed.

I can't understand why he can't be banged up immediately while he waits for his revised sentence.
