Lost his seat & became handcuffed to the shant ?

Was a propper geezer RIP

Awful news. I felt he was treated shabbily by the Lib Dems when at his most vulnerable. He would have been a great force in helping to put the Lib Dems as a major force in politics.

MP for my seat, met him a few times, very likable and talented guy who was immensely popular across Scotland.

The saddest thing, however, is that this isn't unexpected

Very sad news. He always came across as a decent guy in his television interviews.

a real shame, he'd just lost his seat and he could have been spending more time with his family now. Wonder if it was his heart as he always seemed to be sweating a bit.

Lembit Opik was alluding to it on the BBC earlier on.
The police were called to the scene at the family home.

Perhaps we shouldn`t speculate, but it`s only observation.

I just wondered how you thought that.
I didn't know anything other than he'd died suddenly.
What you say certainly would make you think that.
Really sad if true.

Suspicion = possibility of foul play.

This is a political figure. They will exhaust all other avenues before there is clarity.

seems more common now that the media don't speculate as to the cause of death until after the post mortem.

particularly as there was potentially no one present during the event, and he wasn't admitted to hospital.

so "no suspicious circumstances" is still entirely in line with a "natural" death.

Yet the police being present at the scene is in line with "unnatural" death.

Suddenly is often used for suicide as well.

he had a drink problem. this is well documented - see his recent question time appearance. Perhaps the body just couldn't cope with the stress he was putting it under ?

Police are not treating his death as suspicious and a source told MailOnline he may have collapsed and died after a night of drinking but there is no evidence to suggest it was suicide.

My next door neighbour drank himself to death. Could not cope with being made redundant at age 60

Drank at least one bottle of whisky every day for 6 months

He had a doner card but they couldn't use any of his internal organs because they were all ruined

heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, stomach, all destroyed

in 6 months , was he a drinker before

Poor old Charlie . Obviously  took Blatters re-election very badly...If only he'd hung on for a few more days!

Surprised the CCDA not got Nicola Sturgeon in the frame for this one.

She and her party stole his parliamentary seat and he then drank himself to death with nothing to live for.

Some lovely things said about him in parliament today.

seen that in the parliament first , his son was there only watched a few people say things to the son , obviously he was not on camera but sounded a well respected man , knew this anyway but nice gesture

His death wasn't suicide which will come as a disappointment to the ghouls and muck rakers.

In that case, half the population is committing suicide by eating themselves to death.

All the affectionate drinking stories reported this week, as is normal when someone passes away.
Things like 'taxi' being his nick-name.
Or getting a train to Newcastle and getting off at Peterborough
Or the legend that he went to bed at the same hour as Thatcher and Ashdown were getting up, somewhere around 5am.

My guess is that if these were the fond stories, there must have been some brutal ones too.
