Interesting article on positive test free 'micro-doping' - where athletes take a small dose of a prohibited substance at night and by morning it is out of their system, unless they are tested at night(which apparently is very rare) their drug test will come up clean. Despite the small dosages some athletes in the conducted trial showed significant improvement in their performance. From the article: One of the athletes ran 24 kilometers every day and improved on his personal best during the test period by ten minutes. During the 29 days of testing, the greatest improvement for the indoor 3,000 meters was an epic 31 seconds. Werner Franke, a doping expert from Heidelberg, isn't surprised by the study. "By using this method, you can evade positive tests," said Franke "It's child's play. I've said it for years." Yet he does see a chance for the anti-doping campaign. "People who dope using microdoses are effectively always under the influence of drugs at the night," said Franke. "One test annually in the middle of the night could be enough. As long as night-time tests are taboo, we're wasting our time." |

I'd be curious to know who the chit chat panel would root for in the following race:
a) Usain Bolt - always clean b) Justin Gatlin - clean now, served his time, but previously bent c) Bent Smith - white guy, never tested +ve, brutal training regimen, chiselled & pockmarked face and body from 14 hours a day sessions, we know he's taking but proof will come in a month's time All three are regarded as equally likely to win the World Title in 2015, and you've got no financial interest on the race The rest of the field have NPC Ask yourself honestly - who would you cheer for? |

I'd be flabbergasted if anyone in the mens 100m final was completely clean throughout their career Just have to look at the mens marathon marathon. All the 2.08 runners are now dropping 2.04 and below. Training has barely changed in the last 20years.... |

It's a notional race sofiakenny
Just wondering if anyone felt an emotional connection with any of the runners. I recall '88 - Lewis vs Johnson. I did some athletics at the time, and many athletes were rooting for Johnson because he was like them - the years of hard training, determination and drug taking was all over his face. Lewis made things look too easy which it isn't. Also Gordon Pirie before he died would tell anyone who would listen that hard core British athletes, those who'd compromised on careers to fit in extra training rooted for Landy over lunchtime Bannister. |

The best way to ensure a level playing field and a fair race is to let them all crack on with it. We get to watch faster races, they get to know they aren't getting mugged off by an opponent gaining an unfair advantage as they can do it too.

There are dozens of runners nowadays under 10 seconds on a regular basis , this was not the case in the 70's & 80's.
I doubt they are anything like as talented as athletes like Carl Lewis .....so I presume technology has made the tracks faster for sprinters in the last 10 to 15 years ? |
|
By:
Faster tracks for sure, but also it's now a highly paid fully professional sport, attracting and keeping more athletes that would have been lost to other pro sports, and also prolonging their career way past what was feasible 30 or 40 years ago.

...and for those athletes that don't want to increase the risk of early death, deformity or lifelong illnesses, that are prepared to simply train harder and smarter than their rivals? We've got what you describe above in the form of WWF wrestling. They call it 'Sports Entertainment'. Seems to attract an interesting crowd. |

I want the Gatlin dude to beat the bolt dude.
Athletics is proper 5hit eitherway, but its a win-win situation as far as I can see. If gatlin wins without taking drugs then surely its even more powerful a statement than if he loses that 'he lost while taking and wins without' much more interesting that bolt turns up and wins again. on the other hand if he wins now and gets found out to still be taking then it's hilarious and further undermines a 5hit sport. |
|
By:
if you think its like that then don't watch it.
|
|
By:
How do drugs help Gatlin with his fluidity? his rhythm looks so much smoother.
Mind you if take ecstasy you can move like Wayne Sleep. |
|
By:
SH
I wouldnt go out my way to watch it, but while I wait between races on the nags Ill watch just in case gatlin beats the lad coining in money from advertising |
|
By:
I want Gatlin to win. I imagine he's done so many drugs his wedding tackle looks like poking a couple of almonds with your toe, but he's been prepared to risk having no life except this one and has trained like a demon for this, not done the celebrity circuit of top gear etc.

Bolt is 29 now, a big gangly unit and not race sharp. Gatlin must be a massive price here.
