Can't believe you guys have never seen a may bug before, there's loads of them around here.

I've never seen or heard of it tbh. Horrible looking thing.

In America they get called June Bugs.  "As jittery as a June Bug" is a common way to describe a nervous person.

Cockchafers  larva live in the soil for 3 years  before pupating into the adult beetle.

I've heard of them but, because of the Yank accent, I genuinely thought they were called 'dune' bugs.

I've never seen a May bug either, but the wiki link that Fishy posted shows a picture of one in Yorkshire, so they're not just a southern thing.

I woke up to find a huge tabby cat in my room this morning.

Seriously, I had my window open, so it's gone up on the conservatory roof and jumped up through the window. Cheeky barsteward.

Several years ago my boxer dog came into the living room with a worried look upon his face and, once he'd got my attention, kept running to the foot of the stairs and staring up intently.  Up I went to find a large parrot in my bedroom!

Never seen one till tonight either my daughter was filming it,strange looking things huge as well quite common apparently but I've never seen one on 40 years till tonight..

I've been put straight about my earlier confusion over June/dune bugs. I'm assured that they indeed say 'June' and that 'dune' is pronounced 'doon' - stupid Yanks!

I left my window open one night years ago and a bat flew in - tried to catch it in a bin bag net i made. eventually cornered it and put on a pair of marigolds to grab it. Put it in a box and released it outside. Was a cute wee thing.

yours sounds like a big moth. I once saw one when i was about eight thought i'd found a rare white bee. can get very big.
