In fairness, I think Tommy Toes himself could have easily matched KP's feat today. If Surrey had put TT on a 'free Peppa Pig ice lolly for every run scored' contract, there's no doubt in my mind that he would have easily outstripped all previous batting records from the days of Hanif Mohammad to Brian Lara.

We'd probably be looking at a scorecard after the 4 days that read :

Well, it won't be KP scoring against the Aussies this summer, according to Jonathon Agnew on Radio 5 a little earlier.

He said he'd 'been told' that Strauss had made it clear to KP that he'll never play for England again - and that's that.

Surely, miles more fall-out to come - again.

Not a great KP fan, but Strauss is going to be remembered only for this if England get thrashed in the Ashes.

KP really is a prat of the highest order - but he's a bloody great cricketer when he wants to be.

The ins and outs of all the shenanigans that have gone on with him probably do warrant a barring for life (if only so the putrid Piers Morgan doesn't get his way) but there's also the other side of the coin that says 'how can you deny a place to a man with so much talent - and England in such desperate cricketing straits of late?'.

If England do get a thrashing against the Aussies (which is more than likely) Strauss will have to carry the can - and be remembered for little else, which is rather unfair.

He won't play for England again. I used to love cricket but I just can't be bothered with it anymore.

I'll go to The Oval of course for a day out in the Summer, it's not far from me but really I'm not too bothered. Much prefer my rugby.

Some good points being made at the moment on TalkSport about how insular cricket is versus other sports and how other sports can handle 'difficult' players so much better than cricket ever does.

KP has never, for example,  to my certain knowledge told an entire crowd to "find another County" as they weren't fit to be part of Staffordshire. Less still told them they were "muppets, drunks and hooligans".

No TT, he actually became "box office" on the strength of it.  He basically became one of the "Beautiful People", hanging out with the likes of you, Beyonce and Wilfred Hyde White, which is a quality Trifecta at any time.

Pieterson can be exceptional on his day but his name wouldn't be close to being first on the team sheet if you needed someone to go out and get a score for you. England didn't have enough batting experience when they went down to Aus last time around and the three players they needed solid performances from were Cook, Pieterson and Bell. Cook had the pressure of captaincy. Pieterson had no such excuse. Outscoring someone like Stokes and Carberry by about 15 runs in a five test series simply wasn't good enough.

To an extent allowances can be made for ar5edom. They were for Boycott and Botham but then they did tend to perform when the chips were down. Pieterson pi55ed on his and everybody else's chips.

Me and another forumite called Reculver used to make up various stories about Wilfred and Robert and their antics at the races and nightspots. They can probably be tracked down on the various forums here by doing some basic searches.

When the chips are down, the pressure is on and the occasion is as big and daunting as it can be, then Pietersen is the one man you do want on your side, the one man who does perform and rewrite cricket history.

Regards KP's performances under pressure I am much more in the screamingfrombeneaththewaves camp than the eternaloptimist one.  Some awesome pressure innings, he was top scorer in the 2013/14 ashes for england fwiw.

yep all the major achievements since 2005 have involved a massive contribution from KP - ashes 2005 and 2010/11, india away 2012 and world T20 champions. wouldn't have won any of those without him

There have been utter twáts in all forms of sport who have been revered and worshipped. Some of those have stuck several fingers up to sports governing bodies (and captains) on a regular basis. Did their country not play them? Too facking right they did..
