ever seen "The bookie that vanished" it's quite a new film

I posted one on the 'forgotten' films thread - Came a Hot Friday, a New Zealand film from 1985.

Obviously The Sting is the daddy. Others that spring to mind are Let It Ride and Rounders. Paul Thomas Anderson's first film, Hard Eight, barely qualifies but is definitely worth a watch.

Good shout with Rounders.

Casino and 21 were very good films particulary the former.

Also remember as a kid watching the film about gaye future , it might have been called the gaye future affair.


Surprised no one has made a film about barney tbh,  plenty of content to go on there

Based on the brutal robbery that fascinated Australia, The "The Great Bookie Robbery" is a really good movie.

was the gormless northerner in 'It's That Man Again'

I hear they have got a sequel planned called King Of The Plums if the box office is good on that one.

Outside Bet (Bob Hoskins) was watchable

the gambler (the original one starring james caan, not the mark wahlberg sh1te remake)

That remake was gash.

Snatch I suppose qualifies and that was okay.

And Rounders was peachy.

Croupier by Mike Hodges (Get Carter) is an above average film.

Aye. Clive Owen. Decent shout.

How can anyone forget Maverick (Mel Gibson)

Patrick Marber's play "Dealer's Choice" was an enjoyable night out at the National Theatre back in the 90s, even though I knew next to nothing about Poker.

Not sure it ever transferred to telly or cinema.

surprised nobody has mentioned Two for the Money - one of the best scenes is when al pacino's character (a tipster) infiltrate a GA meeting and starts handing out his card

Thanks for the recommendation, I'd never heard of it. While 'great' may be stretching it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hoffman brilliant as ever.

One would have to go a long way to beat The Sting starring Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Money Plays starring Roy Scheider and Sonia Braga.

Bad Lieutenant (1992) would probably qualify as it contains a strong gambling thread ... Worth a mention if only for the fact it contains some of the greatest swearing in movie history... like this scene here:

Cincinatti Kid and especially Rounders are a disgrace to any respectable poker players. Two things; they are entertaining to watch and I am hardly a respectable poker player. I am experienced enough to know however, that as Paddy Ashdown would say, "I will eat my hat etc. etc.)

I enjoyed Hard Eight

Decades since Le Cop was on the box or available in late-night arty cinemas.

If the BBC insists on filling BBC4 with subtitled police bollox, at least let us enjoy some hilarious subtitled police bollox from France instead of earnest subtitled police bollox from Scandinavia.

They did two sequels but haven't seen them
