think it all depends on your sense of humour ,personaly I thought it was hilarious especially when withnail was so cold in the house that he stripped to his kacks and put that deep heat blam stuff all over his skin to keep warm

Get any 'Withnaillers' together and it usually end sup with them quoting lines to each other. I'm up for that with the best of 'em but it can seem very self-reverential,exclusive and then 'so f*****g what?' to anyone who isn't a dyed in the wool fan.
I just love the use of the English language. The script here is everything since the plot is thinner than any of the 12 Rizlas needed to make a Camberwell Carrot, there are no action sequences or any other traditional cinematic devices to keep the viewer hooked (no sex scenes, in fact women appear for about .001% of the film at a guess). But what glorious word-play and use of language, juxtaposing brilliantly with late 60's counterculture Britain. |

Many a quote here :
. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094336/trivia?tab=qt&ref_=tt_trv_qu Marwood: Give me a Valium, I'm getting the FEAR! Danny: [very calmly] You have done something to your brain. You have made it high. If I lay 10 mls of diazepam on you, it will do something else to your brain. You will make it low. Why trust one drug and not the other? That's politics, innit? Marwood: I'm gonna eat some sugar. [he goes to the kitchen] Danny: I recommend you smoke some more grass. Marwood: No way, no ****g way. Danny: That is an unfortunate political decision. Reflecting these times. Withnail: What are you talking about, Danny? Danny: Politics, man. If you're hanging onto a rising balloon, you're presented with a difficult decision - let go before it's too late or hang on and keep getting higher, posing the question: how long can you keep a grip on the rope? They're selling hippie wigs in Woolworths, man. The greatest decade in the history of mankind is over. And as Presuming Ed here has so consistently pointed out, we have failed to paint it black. |
