On a south facing wall of my property there is a pair of nesting boxes. This morning I noticed that one of these boxes was being used by a couple of Robins. Somewhat surprising this as the boxes have been there for the best part of 30 years and have never had visitors before, presumably due to the fact that they are in full sun for most of the daylight hours.
Q1 Are Robins less intelligent that other birds?
Q2 How long will it be before any heat resistant chicks have flown the nest?
Q3 Is it possible that our feathered friends have reason to believe that we are in for a spell of cloudy days?

From what I recall of reading about birds when I was a boy, Robins make nests close to the ground in thick brambles or nettles.
Our garden faces south and we have had two bird boxes on the west facing wall for years, but they have never attracted any birds to them. Instructions were to put the boxes out of direct sunlight with a clear line of approach. The majority of the birds in our garden live in the conifers on either side. I trim them once a year when spring has long gone and the chicks have flown. Pigeons used to nest in the trees at the bottom of the garden, which provided much needed shade in the summer for outdoor lunches.  My fairly new neighbour asked if the trees were mine. I told him they weren’t, and that the farmer said you can cut off what you like as long as you leave the roots. Can I ask, if you know the boxes are situated in the wrong place,why have you left them there for 30 years ? |

When the couple lived next door before him, she was forever slapping sun cream on her two young kids on sunny days. His grandchildren are going to suffer this year if he doesn't order a 45 gallon drum of it.  He's a bulls hitter anyway. First thing he told my wife when he moved here was that he was retired. I've never known somebody who has packed up work to leave his house every day at 7-15 a.m. in a plumbers van, and get home at 5-00 p.m. for 6 days a week. As you can imagine, we don't talk much. |

I have mates who are one of these, mechanic, decorator (best mate), electrician, plumber, bricklayer, carpet fitter, gas fitter and taxi driver. The last 3 are not even needed any more, no carpets - only hardwood floors, no gas supply, and don't live in London these days. |
