Does anyone seriously believe that the audience was a random cross section of the British electorate? I cant have it under any circumstances. I suppose the difficulty is the only people who would wish / agree to form the audience are not representative of the majority / norm.

Audience was picked by ICM not the BBC. Political make-up of the audience was in these proportions:

5 Labour
5 Conservative
4 LibDem
3 UKIP
2 SNP
2 Green
1 Plaid Cymru

The need for SNP and Plaid Cymru supporters is why, as the Daily Mail complained, some had to be bussed in from Scotland and Wales. The Mail omitted mention of any UKIP members, and the Express counted all non-Conservative/UKIP as left-wing, which ignores the fact that the LibDems are in government with the Tories. On the above figures, both Labour and Conservatives are under-represented, and UKIP are over-represented.

The debate took place in London.
London is a foreign city bursting with immigrants.
Its now rock solid Labour.

Labour is the party of immigrants and middle class liberals, they despise the English working class.

UKIP are the the only party standing up for the working class.
Nigel Farage is the only one speaking on their behalf.

I think its interesting really, when listening to these live debates it may be useful to pay more attention to the parties that get the less ethusive support...I think it was Cicero who when giving a speech in ancient Rome and receiving a great reaction from the public turned to his friend and said " What is wrong have I said something stupid"
Report lfc1971 April 18, 2015 10:12 AM BST
The audience was picked by an independent body but of course these will be highly paid experts and my be incompetent with no actual skills..

Now if they were to say it would be better if there was a ratio of 5 UKIP supporters to say every 2 SNP and 2 Labour, simply because UKIP supporters tend to be more civil and charming than the rest we might get a fairer perspective.

So yes as everyone thought at the time, it was a biased audience.

"of the 200-strong audience, about 58 were Conservative or Ukip supporters while about 102 supported left-leaning parties - Labour, the Lib Dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru or the SNP – and the rest were undecided."

Mr Farage said: "If you were to put Ukip and the Conservatives on the centre-right in current opinion polls, we are on about 49 per cent between us. If the audience make-up didn't reflect that then it's wrong.”

So yes, pretty much 2:1 ratio of identified left leaning people in the audience despite the polls being about 50;50 and as noted correctly above by ramruma, an incredible ratio of 1:1 of the hard left Green + PC + SNP socialists (no doubt their obnoxious activist mob) to the tories. There is no way the ratios can be said to be representative of the UK. How many undecided .. were decided?

Of course the BBC are well aware of that, and Farage was up against the rest of the panel and the audience.

I think the BBC do a good job in pi$$ing off both sides of the political spectrum.

Don't forget this is the organisation who had that tree hugging wet Chris Patten at its head, who has for mer young Conservative Nick Robinson as it's political correspondent and who devoted acres of airtime t the funeral of Margaret Thatcher.

I think they need to keep in with the top brass of whatever political party is in charge in order to keep the license fee going.

Having said that it was blatantly obvious, without Nigel Farage having to mention it, that the audience for the debate gave him no support whatsoever. It seemed unfair and that was compounded by Danny Alexander getting away with the line about UKIP's 'disgusting' utterances in the debate completely unchallenged.

Whatever your politics, unfairness is just not on and Thursday night was unfair, bordering on manipulative for me.

i fully believe that the audience was representative of the polls, i reckon about 13 to 15% were UKIP voters.

However, I also reckon that they were ****cared to applaud anything Farage said.

UKIP certainly is a magnet for some nasty racist bigots, but i also imagine that there are plenty of people with left wing views approaching communism in the labour party.

Given that UKIP are quite clearly a single issue party (the clue is in the name), the fanciful demonisation of the party, its supporters and the flagrant and shameless hypocrisy is quite staggering.

If Marr didn't question what was being said, he may as well have a cardboard cut out of Cameron in the seat, with a tape spewing out the usual smooth ' Marketing speak '  lies.

The ' bias reporting ' was equally evident by ITV in the First tv debate. The questioning by Paxman was very different to Camerin  than it was to Milliband(personal slurs). The audience were muted when Cameron was on, but very animated/ negative when Milliband was on. Even to the point that Kay Burley had to have her personal snide comment to Milliband.
Report Ibrahima Sonko April 19, 2015 3:25 PM BST
The BBC has confirmed that the hand-picked audience for the opposition leaders’ debate was left leaning, despite claiming otherwise live on air.

Out of all the audience members who had declared a party allegiance, only three marked themselves down as UKIP out of a total of 22.

With five selected to represent the Conservatives, that means at best 36 per cent – just over a third – put their ideology as right-of-centre.

After persistent quizzing, the Daily Express managed to get the BBC and ICM to reveal how the audience members were chosen. It confirms that Nigel Farage was correct when he said those present at Westminster Central Hall were “a remarkable audience even by the left-wing standards of the BBC.”

Chairman David Dimbleby denied that claim. He said: “This is an audience that has been carefully chosen not by the BBC, but by an independent polling organisation to represent the balance between all parties.”

The audience was narrowed down to five supporters each for Labour and the Tories, four for the Liberal Democrats, three for UKIP, two each for the SNP and Greens and one for Plaid. In addition, one fifth of the audience was made up of ‘undecided voters’ from within a certain radius around Westminster.

This is not the first time the methodology of ICM, the polling company used by the BBC,  has been challenged.

Before the 2013 county council elections, which were considered the break through for UKIP, ICM had the party at nine per cent. Weeks later it romped home with an average of 26 per cent of the vote where it fielded candidates.

And ahead of the European Elections, where UKIP were the decisive victors, ICM had the party on 11 per cent support; less than half of what they polled a month later.

Farage’s attack on the audience came after he was booed for his views on immigration.

Labour leader Ed Miliband told the UKIP leader,  “It’s never a great idea to attack the audience, Nigel, in my opinion.” Farage replied “The real audience are sitting at home.”

However, statistics by Survation for the Daily Mirror after the debate showed the Conservatives did the best out of the night by not taking part, rising four percentage points, and of those present only Farage increased his party’s popularity, going up one point to 17 per cent.

Speaking after the findings, the UKIP leader said: “Sometimes these things go wrong, sometimes you get groups who apply to be on programmes who perhaps aren’t as truthful on their applications as they could be.

“In this case, the BBC gave the job to a polling company called ICM who are famous for getting everything about Ukip wrong and that I think was the mistake.”

And he told Breitbart London, “ICM got us wrong in 2013, wrong in 2014 and they’ve got us wrong again in 2015. The BBC needs to use a polling company with a better track record.”

“The night of the by-election that Douglas Carswell won in Clacton with a landslide, there was a Ukip representative – Patrick O’Flynn – on Question Time in Clacton and the audience were deeply hostile to him,” he added.

A spokesman from the BBC said: “All the broadcasters and the political parties agreed that the appropriate way to recruit audiences for debates was to ask a respected independent polling organisation to do the job on our behalf.

“That was the case for all the debates in 2010, for the Clegg/Farage debates last year, as well as for both the debates during this campaign – ICM has an established track record of recruiting the audiences for all these debates.”

ICM defended its recruitment process, saying it was “premised on orthodox random location selection techniques.”

It said 30 geographical areas were selected within a 20-mile radius of the venue, as well as a small number of SNP and Plaid Cymru supporters from Scotland and Wales.
