Does anyone seriously believe that the audience was a random cross section of the British electorate? I cant have it under any circumstances. I suppose the difficulty is the only people who would wish / agree to form the audience are not representative of the majority / norm.

That audience was picked by an independant body not the BBC, so nigelFATFACE lied to the whole nation when he accused the BBC of picking a "biased audience"

Audience was picked by ICM not the BBC. Political make-up of the audience was in these proportions:
5 Labour 5 Conservative 4 LibDem 3 UKIP 2 SNP 2 Green 1 Plaid Cymru The need for SNP and Plaid Cymru supporters is why, as the Daily Mail complained, some had to be bussed in from Scotland and Wales. The Mail omitted mention of any UKIP members, and the Express counted all non-Conservative/UKIP as left-wing, which ignores the fact that the LibDems are in government with the Tories. On the above figures, both Labour and Conservatives are under-represented, and UKIP are over-represented. |

Easy for the bbc to pass the buck onto a company that wants the bbc's business.
If it was a fair audience how come ukip did not receive one clap during the whole show, and a scottish party got loads ? |

It could be something to do with the character of UKIP supporters being more civil and introspective and preferring to listen to the debate than say Labour or certainly SNP supporters.

The point is the BBC may very well have chosen a fair selection but there may be a difference in the character of the different partys supporters...a select rabble will always make itself heard.

The debate took place in London.
London is a foreign city bursting with immigrants. Its now rock solid Labour. Labour is the party of immigrants and middle class liberals,they despise the English working class. UKIP are the the only party standing up for the working class. Nigel Farage is the only one speaking on their behalf. |

I think its interesting really, when listening to these live debates it may be useful to pay more attention to the parties that get the less ethusive support...I think it was Cicero who when giving a speech in ancient Rome and receiving a great reaction from the public turned to his friend and said " What is wrong have I said something stupid"

The audience was picked by an independent body but of course these will be highly paid experts and my be incompetent with no actual skills..
Now if they were to say it would be better if there was a ratio of 5 UKIP supporters to say every 2 SNP and 2 Labour, simply because UKIP supporters tend to be more civil and charming than the rest we might get a fairer perspective. |

So yes as everyone thought at the time, it was a biased audience.

Mr Farage said: "If you were to put Ukip and the Conservatives on the centre-right in current opinion polls, we are on about 49 per cent between us. If the audience make-up didn't reflect that then it's wrong.” So yes, pretty much 2:1 ratio of identified left leaning people in the audience despite the polls being about 50;50 and as noted correctly above by ramruma, an incredible ratio of 1:1 of the hard left Green + PC + SNP socialists (no doubt their obnoxious activist mob) to the tories. There is no way the ratios can be said to be representative of the UK. How many undecided .. were decided? |

IMHO the audience should be told to shut the **** up or you're out, and then it would be irrelevant, it's pathetic that it's a sort of football match with lots of who can boo/cheer the loudest to try and swing opinion.

I don't think there is any need for a studio audience, just do the debate in front of the cameras with pre-set questions and do not tip anyone off beforehand like they do on Question Time.

The audience has a great influence on the way a debate is perceived by onlookers.
Of course the BBC are well aware of that, and Farage was up against the rest of the panel and the audience. It was reminiscent of the hatchet job the BBC did against Nick Griffin and more recently George Galloway. I was dismayed to see Farage lining up with four lefties to be honest. I though he got off quite lightly in the circumstances. |
