I'm of a similar mind, Pumpy.
When it came to me I was reasonably confident it was worth a few thousand (because of its known provenance) and then I noticed its resemblance to Van Dyck and started to get excited. |

It's definitely been in an attic for a very long time, that much I can guarantee, and more than likely in the possession of my family for a couple of hundred years before that.

It's sideways because denmark is further east, by the time you get to australia they are upside down.

Lateral thinking would be to check any will for a mention, and deep lateral thinking would be to check older wills from previous generations for a mention, if they still exist.

A real shame it's in such poor condition, if restored I hope it would take on some of the lustre of the authenticated portrait.

I think though you're maybe forgetting something in that unless I'm misreading things you're looking for an artist who it is OF, my understanding is that mostly artists were commisioned to paint the commisioner or an important person.
So if it's been in your family for generations and they are of old money, my first guess would be it's perhaps of say your great-great-great(x10)-grandfather or uncle or something. And if it's in poor condition, is it just dirty varnish that could be cleaned up? Oils are AFAIK varnished over as otherwise they dry up and crack and flake and so on. (Don't clean it yourself). |

I don't think it's of an artist himself, you can't see his arm reaching out and selfie sticks were only invented a couple of years ago.

Alas, JC, its problems go beyond removing the dirt, some areas are flaking and damaged. The good news being that the face is largely okay.
Good point regards it being a family member, too, but it really does closely resemble a Van Dyck self-portrait to my eye. |

the bottom of the painting (below the shoulder)suggests its a woman by the shape, as if there is a bust there by following the line of the clothing.
though the moustache is concerning :) the shoulder also doesn't look quite right its too thick above the lining of clothing and the back looks too big. In comparison the 2nd painting looks more well proportioned. But I hope im wrong and its worth a good few quid  |

It's the damage making it appear disproportionate on screen, M01, in the flesh it looks good. He's wearing some sort of voluminous cloak with his arm raised slightly.

The collar is quite odd, very plain, it makes me think almost like he might be a religious person.

The collar is puritanical to my eye, very much in keeping with the mid seventeenth century.

on the back of the painting is there any marks or stickers?
If its been in an art exhibition they often have some kind of sticker on the back even with a year or something on it. |

No, nothing, it's covered by some very old and crispy paper which I would have to rip off if I wanted to investigate further.

yeah poker can you post a pic of the back , I bought a framed and glazed watercolour its a landscape a year or so ago and although not signed on the front ,it has some notes on the back in pencil, david cox junior , ilooked him up on the net and he is a quite prominent Victorian artist ! his works don't go for megabucks but I only paid peanuts for it at a carboot ,good luck with yours pokerm

That frame isn't very old at all, so don't get your hopes up.

The frame might not be original, Crags, but it is still at least 100 years old without doubt. And I'm reasonably sure the painting itself is 300 years plus.

It's not beyond reason that the frame is actually 370 years old, some of those early works were in very plain settings.
