Actually sofia, that was pretty funny. But today it's mostly testosterone/steroid/sports-psychologist-driven abuse with little wit.

And yes, he loved his Racing too. There were some great stories of his 'Nap of the Day' duels with fellow cricket commentator J Bannister over the course of the flat season.

Yes sad news, legend of the game. Arlott before my time so he IS the voice of cricket for me.
I wasn't aware he was into horse racing but for me like many the voice of cricket.Very sad news indeed.

Was a regular outside broadcast guest on the Morning Line at one time. Sprint handicaps were his thing. RIP.

Tried explaining to the missus why I had such fond memories during those long school summer holidays, of getting up in time to hear Tony Lewis and Richie Benaud saying good morning to each other and the viewers. Women will never understand why that was important and stirs up such abiding memories.

There are exceptions I'm sure but I find women have no sense of nostalgia whatsoever.

Radio 5 did a decent tribute hour on Richie just now (2000-2100)
Very sad. There must be a fair few on here like me that learned all about cricket growing up largely by listening to the wonderful Richie Benaud.
