That is a shame.
What a lovely man he was.
Report Angel Gabrial April 10, 2015 12:14 AM BST
Also a very shrewd racing tipster.

"And who knows, maybe one day they'll be playing the great game up there." — Richie Benaud

RIP

RIP great man. Better than any commentators around now.
Report EvgenyKissin April 10, 2015 12:24 AM BST
Liked his horse racing too.
Report bodil April 10, 2015 12:39 AM BST
Great pity - right up there with John Arlott as a commentator.  None better.  They were hard men when he was a player but they didn't indulge in the kind of brainless verbal **** the current crop go in for.   www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt1C00e__5c

From the BBC obituary:

When asked to sum up his commentary style, he said his mantra was: "If you can add to what's on the screen then do it, otherwise shut up."

If only other commentators would do that.
Report bodil April 10, 2015 12:48 AM BST
Actually sofia, that was pretty funny.  But today it's mostly testosterone/steroid/sports-psychologist-driven abuse with little wit.
Report alun2005 April 10, 2015 12:49 AM BST
Very sad news indeed.

And yes, he loved his Racing too. There were some great stories of his 'Nap of the Day' duels with fellow cricket commentator J Bannister over the course of the flat season.
Report BARROWBOY April 10, 2015 12:50 AM BST
heard him commenting on gambling once & his advice was never to bet on anything that could talk.

A great shame.

"That's gone straight into the confectionary stall and out again"
Report rob_dylan April 10, 2015 6:28 AM BST
Yes sad news, legend of the game.  Arlott before my time so he IS the voice of cricket for me.
Report bigmo April 10, 2015 6:40 AM BST
I wasn't aware he was into horse racing but for me like many the voice of cricket.Very sad news indeed.

A good man and a sad loss.

One of Aussie's best. You could say the English couldn't give a castlemaine xxxx for any of the rest.
Report rob_dylan April 10, 2015 7:52 AM BST
"I don't bet on anything that can speak".  Think that may have been Benaud's line.
Report johnn April 10, 2015 7:57 AM BST
Was a regular outside broadcast guest on the Morning Line at one time. Sprint handicaps were his thing. RIP.

This is one of the occasions where the tribute 'he had a great innings' is truly appropriate.

Legend of the game.

One of the great attacking, free-thinking captains and all-rounders, who gave up playing far too early because he couldn't make a living out of the game. Played his part in the epic 1960-1 Aus vs W Indies series, with the tied Test.

The BBC lent him tapes of Peter O'Sullevan's racing commentaries to learn how to be a broadcaster.

In at the start of the Packer revolution, which enabled modern players to earn a decent wage.

How blessed were we 30 or 40 years ago to have both Arlott AND Benaud to listen to? One of the minor annoyances of going deaf is never to be able to re-hear them.

Top table of sports commentators.

The wonderful days of Test match cricket on the Beeb  76 West Indies , 81 Headingley , great memories.

"And Glenn McGrath dismissed for two, just 98 runs short of his century."

I still miss his "Good morning all" on the first day of the first test match of the season. It signalled the start of summer for me. R.I.P Richie, you were a part of my childhood i will never forget ..

Very sad news, he was an absolute legend and I use that word very sparingly in life.

Tried explaining to the missus why I had such fond memories during those long school summer holidays, of getting up in time to hear Tony Lewis and Richie Benaud saying good morning to each other and the viewers.  Women will never understand why that was important and stirs up such abiding memories.

There are exceptions I'm sure  but I find women have no sense of nostalgia whatsoever.

Very sad. There must be a fair few on here like me that learned all about cricket growing up largely by listening to the wonderful Richie Benaud.
