It`s a bit ironic that they endorsed the Union to save the Labour Party down south in the Westminster Parliament and have ended up committing political suicide in Scotland. We had a chance to get rid of the Tories for eternity and all the traditional Labour supporters in Scotland who voted YES won`t forget the betrayal and won`t vote Labour again. mighty

Sturgeon has crept up on me. I'd never really rated her and thought she rode on Salmond's coat tails but she seems to be bringing a more measured approach and has lost some of her former shrillness. I think she came in under the radar tonight and has surprised a lot of people (myself included) by her performance but she did benefit by the attention not being on her and the fact that she knew the Westminster brief better than the others knew Scotland's and so she got a very easy ride.

I don't agree with your central contention. We are all guilty of sometimes substituting what we want to happen for what will happen and convincing ourselves it is therefore a fait accompli. Let's not forget that a pretty big majority of Scots didn't want independence despite the yes group running a really good and positive campaign. That's relevant because people got really carried away with "what was going to happen" and were dumbfounded when it didn't. The silent majority always speaks in the end.

My view is that the SNP will send a bigger contingent to Westminster for sure but that Labour and indeed Lib Dem will still send a good number. I certainly don't see any kind of wipe out as per your prediction.
Report themightymac April 3, 2015 2:47 AM BST
EO, I never thought that I would ever see the day when one could get 14/1 on the Labour Party to have most seats in Scotland at a General Election and tbh I wouldn`t bet them @ 1000/1. They were canvassing here very recently and got a hostile reception and I think they were generally shocked at the number of traditional and lifetime Labour supporters who informed them that they were switching their vote to the SNP, particularly since this is historically a Labour stronghold and has never ever elected an MP other than a Labour candidate, even with the boundary changes over the years. Assuming that this trend is similar all over the country, then I think they must be extremely worried.

Nicola is a very intelligent debater and a very shrewd cookie and it`s possible that the result would have been very different on the Indy vote if she had been at the helm. No matter the historical price. If Scotland had been independent in the 1970s, we'd have had a huge oil fund now, like Norway. Instead, Thatcher and co blew it all.

Amazing how many top economists there are around this forum, innit. DAVID CAMERON - "It would be wrong to suggest that Scotland could not be another such successful, independent country. ." AND the TIMES agreed with him. AND we will be.

Scotland could be a successful independent country but the immediate reality would be a long way from Sturgeon's utopia.
But maybe, with her renowned negotiating skills, she could get rump UK to waive Scotland's share of the debt (£100 billion) then find a few hundred billion from behind the sofa as a farewell present. Oh and Scotland can keep the pound so that RUK can bail her out when she occasionally gets her sums wrong.

Why do the snp feel they have the right to split Britain up? The only reason there is an England Scotland and Wales is because of the Romans then the invading Germanic tribes, before that we were one Keltic people.
The border that divides what is now called England and Scotland is basically a few miles from the Roman great divide.  A wall built along Britain’s narrowest points East to West. In other words an artificial divide nothing to do with race or culture.
Maybe its time for a political party of British unity instead of divide.

Interesting betting market on the number of Labour seats in Scotland. What would your money be on EO?

I'd be interested on seeing that market mighty. There may be a little juice in a higher number of Labour MP's returned than may be being predicted. I understand this feeling that there has been a sea change in the political landscape but looking at how things are now configured this needs to be totally seismic to see SNP overtake Labour. Of course that may be as is being predicted a foregone conclusion. My gut feeling is that things will move back to Labour in the next few weeks. Whether that is enough to see them retain their lead I don't know but if 14-1 is available I've seen a lot worse shouts. Can it possibly be that the game changer could be a red herring? I'll put it this way if it isn't then the electorate are voting in a very peculiar way. The people of Scotland always knew Labour were pro union and as I pointed out before they also voted by a fair majority to maintain the status quo. So who do they want to kick and why? If anybody it should be themselves. It gets ore peculiar. That they would seek to register a protest vote in a general election doesn't stack up for me. It's never been the case before. Don't forget the morning after the first leaders debate last tie around the papers were full of Lib Dems leading the polls stories. What happened? Clegg walked on water but the party actually lost seats. I short I'd happily back Labour at 14-1 against the SNP as I don't think it can logically be any bigger than half those odds irrespective of what the polls are saying right now because history has shown us that the final weeks concentrates peoples minds.
Report themightymac April 4, 2015 3:25 AM BST
Best to have a look around for the best odds EO but WH prices are:

0-5 5/1
6-10 3/1
11-15 3/1
16-20 4/1
21-25 5/1
26-30 7/1
31-35 7/1
36-40 9/1
41-45 20/1
46+ 20/1

Regards Labour getting most seats, Bookies have read your post, lol. Again you have to shop around but all I can see with firms is half them odds about 7/1 like you stated. You can get 13.5 on BF but for peanuts. However one can lay SNP for about 1k @ 1.1 but I`d advise you against it, lol.
