The YES campaigns financial model depended on an oil price of $100+. With this decimated and the oil industry in turmoil Scotland would have went the way of Greece.
God knows the mentality of the YES voters who would still seek independence despite this. We'd be living off Tatties and Neeps.

$100 p/b based on UK govt figures which were £10 p/b HIGHER.

Oh, and all this time I believed you akabula. Nothing to do with oil, it was "all based on a Braveheart theme" - nowt to do with oil.Laugh

Well enlighten me Plat as I can't see what help the historical price of oil would have been to Scotland had the YES campaigners succeeded.

No matter the historical price. If Scotland had been independent in the 1970s, we'd have had a huge oil fund now, like Norway. Instead, Thatcher and co blew it all.

Amazing how many top economists there are around this forum, innit. DAVID CAMERON - "It would be wrong to suggest that Scotland could not be another such successful, independent country. ." AND the TIMES agreed with him. AND we will be.

Scotland could be a successful independent country but the immediate reality would be a long way from Sturgeon's utopia.
But maybe, with her renowned negotiating skills, she could get rump UK to waive Scotland's share of the debt (£100 billion) then find a few hundred billion from behind the sofa as a farewell present. Oh and Scotland can keep the pound so that RUK can bail her out when she occasionally gets her sums wrong.
By:

Funny, I've never heard her mention Utopia.
By:

I heard her mention the word "free" several times last night.

Free prescriptions, free university places, more money for education, hospitals, benefits. Perhaps not utopia but it all costs money which we don't have.

It's certain that the UK wouldn't want a failed state on it's border so would probably be generous and I for one would wish Scotland well.
Would the Eu be accommodating? Who knows, they already have Greece to pay for.

@Alias
The question was what relevance would historical oil prices have if Scotland had gained independence in 2014?
For those who don't know the Yessers only managed to convince 38% of the electorate to vote in favour of independence.

@mac
Of course we have all those things thanks to being a member of The Union.

The invention of money was the biggest con trick in human history. Workers slog their guts out, then get given some bits of paper at the end of the week to buy things that they manufactured in the first place. LaughLaugh We should all go back to the barter system. Trading goods for goods. All them rich bankers and all the elite scroungers who live off the back of working people would all have to get off their lazy butts and actually do some work to survive.

BTW I've asked Alias this question four or five times without a reply.
As part of their spiel the SNP always bring up food banks and say how terrible that they exist and that in an Independent Scotland they would make sure they weren't needed.
Now I'm not arguing with the sentiments but why haven't the SNP addressed them as they have the means at hand in the Scottish Parliaments powers.
They have for instance the power to raise a further 2p in the pound through income tax. So why hasn't the SNP acted before now?
By:

Akabula the SNP are s hit scared to raise taxes,A few years ago whilst in dispute with my council over the ammount of community tax i was paying compared to my neighbours I got a letter from John Swinndle saying it would not matter as personal income tax was about to replace the community tax. What happened to that bright idea. All off the current lot in Holyrood would not kow they had s hite on their shoes unless they tasted it,Run a country would be beyond them.

Why do the snp feel they have the right to split Britain up? The only reason there is an England Scotland and Wales is because of the Romans then the invading Germanic tribes, before that we were one Keltic people.
The border that divides what is now called England and Scotland is basically a few miles from the Roman great divide.  A wall built along Britain’s narrowest points East to West. In other words an artificial divide nothing to do with race or culture.
Maybe its time for a political party of British unity instead of divide.

We aint even a united people.
The term sassenachs was actually used by the highlanders to describe those in the borders and their description of those in the certral belt was rather derogatory.
Thank God that only just over a third voted yes. I think that it is a despicable act to try and break up the Union.

I agree with you and the only thing that unites us is we are British.
There are differences throughout the Union and that was the point I was trying to make.
Whilst it's good to have separate identities in sports for instance I love the Olympics where we compete as one.

Interesting betting market on the number of Labour seats in Scotland. What would your money be on EO?

I'd be interested on seeing that market mighty. There may be a little juice in a higher number of Labour MP's returned than may be being predicted. I understand this feeling that there has been a sea change in the political landscape but looking at how things are now configured this needs to be totally seismic to see SNP overtake Labour. Of course that may be as is being predicted a foregone conclusion. My gut feeling is that things will move back to Labour in the next few weeks. Whether that is enough to see them retain their lead I don't know but if 14-1 is available I've seen a lot worse shouts. Can it possibly be that the game changer could be a red herring? I'll put it this way if it isn't then the electorate are voting in a very peculiar way. The people of Scotland always knew Labour were pro union and as I pointed out before they also voted by a fair majority to maintain the status quo. So who do they want to kick and why? If anybody it should be themselves. It gets ore peculiar. That they would seek to register a protest vote in a general election doesn't stack up for me. It's never been the case before. Don't forget the morning after the first leaders debate last tie around the papers were full of Lib Dems leading the polls stories. What happened? Clegg walked on water but the party actually lost seats. I short I'd happily back Labour at 14-1 against the SNP as I don't think it can logically be any bigger than half those odds irrespective of what the polls are saying right now because history has shown us that the final weeks concentrates peoples minds.

Best to have a look around for the best odds EO but WH prices are:

0-5 5/1
6-10 3/1
11-15 3/1
16-20 4/1
21-25 5/1
26-30 7/1
31-35 7/1
36-40 9/1
41-45 20/1
46+ 20/1

Regards Labour getting most seats, Bookies have read your post, lol. Again you have to shop around but all I can see with firms is half them odds about 7/1 like you stated. You can get 13.5 on BF but for peanuts. However one can lay SNP for about 1k @ 1.1 but I`d advise you against it, lol.

Interested to hear what price regards total Labour seats appeals to you regards value?

"We ain't even a united people" - No, there are you royalty loving, tory bum kissing huns, and the rest of us.

You keep telling the YESSERS (45% of those who voted) to "get over it" etc, yet YOU are obsessed with continuing posts like the above. You also insist on adding ABSTAINERS as if they'd voted No.

Get used to the "despicable act". The union itself was seen a s a despicable act when it was enacted. NO universal suffrage then of course, but anti union riots all over Scotland because of the betrayal by the ruling class. The sun is setting on your corrupt union.

Vacuous nonsense. WHO created the current conditions|?

How many questions have I asked you without reply? Here's one again:
IF Scotland is such a drain on the union, WHY were the Tories so desperate to keep us in it?

OH, and please explain your wonderful classic:

Firstly no one has claimed that Scotland is a drain. Secondly Alias what is it that you fail to get about BETTER TOGETHER?
That means it's better for England, better for Scotland, better for Wales and better for Northern Island if we are all together.
Get it? BETTER TOGETHER.

On here I constantly asked why we should consider going it alone. The theme running through everyone's reply was we'd be a Free nation.
Freedom! Get it? Freedom!
When pointed out that the Yes campaign had failed to give us financial detail and there was uncertainty over various things like EU membership all that came back was "but we'll be free".
Was claptrap and you know it Alias. Oh and I forgot the old chestnut "we'll get rid of the Tories".
This despite the worst governments in living memory were led by 2 Labour Stalwarts. Well actually 2 Scottish Labour stalwarts.

Until the referendum you may with some legitimacy have been able to make the above statement Alias but you'll never have a better time for a yes vote and you were sent running for the hills quicker than the remnants at Culloden. You need to deal with reality or the bitterness will rot you from within. The people of Scotland heard what you had to say and after giving it serious consideration they closed the door in your face. You can stand there ranting and raving. You can wait silently for them to change their minds. Or you can limp away with all the dignity you can muster but that door ain't opening again. No sir. And even if it does you'll be getting a chamber pot tipped over your head next time you impertinent wretch.

EO - Laugh and this from a YES voter?

As you no doubt well know, we are talking about a movement, not an ephemeral flash in the pan. You can't defeat an ideal, and it's growing. We can wait a while longer.

akabula, you calling anyone a bigot is beyond hilarious. Now if you really think the "bubble" (I don't identify one) is about to burst, away you go and fill your boots. Some big prices about for a confident unionist punter like you.

Well actually 2 Scottish Labour stalwarts.  Correct, even if "Labour" when applied here is something of a misnomer.

Now I'm not arguing with the sentiments but why haven't the SNP addressed them as they have the means at hand in the Scottish Parliaments powers. As you well know, the Scottish govt have limited tax varying powers, but nothing like the power to roll back Tory cuts. Hands tied springs to mind. Why haven't your heroic LibDems done something to eradicate poverty while in government? Malcolm Bruce on STV earlier saying LibDems are "party of the workers", ffs. Must be on something, he thinks he's Lenin.Laugh
