pretty much the only female singer songwriter I've got time for.  bit of a liberty by the beeb saying

"Best known for her 1970 hit Big Yellow Taxi"

Bit disrespectful to sum up her career like that imo.

In December she told Billboard magazine that she had a rare skin condition, Morgellons disease, which prevented her from performing.
"I can't sing any more - don't miss it. I can't play any more - don't miss it. I've got all these instruments laying around and I hopefully one day I'll pick them up," she was quoted as saying.
Morgellons is a controversial condition and is not recognised by mainstream medical authorities. Sufferers say it is characterised by crawling and stinging sensations under the skin but many in the medical community believe it is a psychiatric disorder.

Not all bad news then

Agree Rob.   Very fine songwriter. Funny that I remember exactly where I was when I first heard her - Chelsea Morning at Harlequin Records in Fleet Street (used to be almost opposite El Vinos). 1968 I think.  Same shop I later bought Madcap Laughs by Syd on the day it came out.

here's one you'll know.....

That was Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell, a song in which Joni complains they paved paradise to put up a parking lot, a measure which actually would have alleviated traffic congestion on the outskirts of paradise, something which Joni singularly fails to point out, perhaps because it doesn't quite fit in with her blinkered view of the world. Nevertheless, nice song. It's 4:35 AM, you're listening to Up With The Partridge.

I THINK " Big Yellow Taxi " was the only substantial single hit she had in the UK. " Woodstock " got to No 1 bit it was the Ian Matthews version. I would have thought " Both Sides Now " would be considered her most iconic song but as has been said ridiculous to judge her on two or three songs. She was a good old-fashioned album artist.

Hi Salmon.  I would have thought that too, and just looked it up to confirm - "Big Yellow Taxi" reached No 11 in the UK in 1970, BUT "Got 'til it's gone" reached no. 6 in October 1997 (never heard of itWink)

Remember seeing an interview with Graham Nash talking about when Joni had turned up in Laurel Canyon and blew everybody away with her songwriting. Good Luck JoniLove

Joni Mitchell is one of the great singer/songwriters. 'Blue' is my favourite album. 'All I want' and "River' are brilliant tracks.
Disagree with the OP though that she's the only good female singer/songwriter. Off the top of my head Carole King, Kate Bush, Laura marling all brilliant. I'm sure a few others too.

Blue is a brilliant album.  Carey my favourite song, got it on now.

Her greatest albums for my money :

1. The Hissing of Summer Lawns (maybe the best album by ANYONE)

2. Hejira

3. Blue

A peerless run of albums in the 70s. A shame about the 80s and beyond.

I still have a soft spot for "Ladies of the Canyon" though I know the critics don't.
Incidentally Laura Nyro is the female singer/songwriter who comes closest to Joni.

Salmon - I am with you, although I like all those listed below.  Interestingly, The Great Rock Discography, whose opinions I generally value for our period, has Ladies of the Canyon rated 9 (of 10) with Hejira at 10 (I agree!) and all others rated 7 at best.(Which I am ok with apart from Blue which I would have as a 9)

"For free" (from LOTC) is a real favourite of mine, despite its sentimentality.
