I'm not sure if this event made the news over here, but two or three years ago there was a situation in America somewhat similar to the recent tragedy in the Alps.
The captain of an aircraft was knocking on the cockpit door demanding to be readmitted after being locked out by his co-pilot. The co-pilot refused. The difference in this case, however, was that the co-pilot suspected the captain was mentally unstable and, sure enough, after a few minutes of trying to bang the door down he stanted ranting about wanting to "visit Jesus" and "bombs on the plane" etc and had to be restrained by the passengers. I think it was a flight to or from Las Vegas if i remember correctly.

I was wondering if the poor people on the German aircraft might have thought that the captain was suffering some sort of mental breakdown, not Andreas Lubitz.
Yes, Jet Blue, that's the story I was thinking about.
It could have so easily ended in a similar tragedy as flight 9525.
It doesn't take much imagination to extrapolate the Jet Blue incident to the German Wings tragedy - i.e. the deranged one locks the stable pilot out.
But they didn't, and we have a tragedy. I despair sometimes at the shallowness of thinking by the authorities that are supposed to be protecting us. It happens all the time ... no Ebola screening until person enters UK (after travelling with many other passengers) ... and so on - a long long list unfortunately.
