Hanks is a wonderful actor. He is massively versatile doing everything from comedies to heavy drama. Also, while Pacino and DeNiro are great, they are big time niche actors. Tend to play the same kind of character every film, like Ray Winstone.

Captain Phillips was brilliant. The acting at the end was Oscar worthy and how he never got a mention is beyond me.

Not the right thread but if your talking about underrated actors, look no further than Robert Donat.

The strangest thing happened to me when watching Hanks in Castaway.

The scene were he is attempting some DIY dentistry by smashing that blade on the ice skate into his mouth. Well it got me thinking that i hadn`t had a mouth ulcer for years and that i didn`t miss the pain etc.....well get this. About 2 hours later my gum started feeling tender and stingy, by the next morning i had a full blown mouth ulcer.

Mind over matter is not always useful.

I really like Tom Hanks. He seems to be ageing at an accelerated rate though .
