Although not relevant, the Cyril Smith situation shows what the authorities are capable of if the wrong man is in the frame.

In the six years since Claudia vanished, there have been countless theories about what happened to her...
Theory One: Murdered By A Secret Lover?
Police have described Claudia's private life as ‘mysterious and complex'. They believe she had a series of affairs with married men. A close friend who wouldn't be identified has claimed Claudia had up to 40 secret lovers and was a heavy drinker who was ‘reckless' and ‘easily led'. Was she murdered by one of these men, possibly worried their affair would be exposed?
Last month, police raised the possibility she was killed in her home on the night of 18 March by a lover who then left via a rear alleyway. Officers and sniffer dogs were seen conducting a search of the alley. The fact she didn't send any texts after 8.23pm lends weight to this theory - she normally sent up to 1,000 messages a month.
DS Dai Malyn of North Yorkshire Police said: ‘One hypothesis is something could have happened overnight with another person in the house and then the alleyway was an obvious way out. We're still finding out more about Claudia's lifestyle. I know people have lied to us. People may lie because they're in a relationship. One motive for not coming forward already is because they might have been in a relationship with Claudia and don't want people to find out.'
Theory Two: Abducted By A Predator?
Was Claudia abducted during her two-mile walk to work in the dark on the morning of 19 March? Was that where her killer kidnapped and later murdered her?
While police believe a close male friend was responsible for her death, independent crime experts have suggested she may have been the victim of a stranger - a sexual predator who snatched her on that journey or offered her a lift before abducting her. When her home was searched, her bed was made and it appeared she'd eaten breakfast and brushed her teeth, which supports the theory she left for work on the morning of 19 March but never made it.
At 5.42am that day, an old-style silver Ford Focus hatchback car was seen braking outside Claudia's home. Despite police appeals for the driver to come forward, they've never been traced. Could this mystery driver hold the key to what happened to her?
Theory Three: Living Abroad?
After Claudia disappeared, it emerged she had close links with Cyprus. She'd holidayed there five times, most recently in October 2008, and had been planning to return the month after she vanished. The final text she's known to have received came from a bar worker on the island.
Six months after she vanished, officers flew out to Cyprus because they believed she might have been living there secretly. To date, there have been no sightings of Claudia. Her passport was found at her home, so it's unlikely this is the answer to her disappearance.
The arrests
Police have made several arrests, but haven't charged anyone. In May 2014, mental health worker Michael Snelling, 59, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He worked at the same university as Claudia, drank in the same pub and lived near her. He was released without charge.
In July 2014, a 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice after a search of The Acomb pub in York, where Claudia had been seen drinking in the weeks before her disappearance. He was later released on bail. pub landlord
Last year, a cigarette butt with male DNA was found in the ashtray of Claudia's car. Tests revealed it was smoked by a left-hander, but the DNA couldn't be matched on the National Crime Database.

I have to chuckle at theory 3. It's amazing that our under manned yet diligent and dedicated police force can always find time to follow up fruitless leads in sunnier climes. eg Lord Lucan, Madeline McCann, whilst violent incidents in Salford and Hackney don't seem to justify the same effort.
And hello Rob.

this could be a case in which a few men were involved with a single lady after a drink and sex game which went wrong thats why the police are taking so long

I think the best way forward is to wait until 2040 when Claudia would be about 80 and put the case in the hands of the crime team that have convicted Stuart Hall and Rolf Harris.

You'd think that would make it easier to solve though - surely the Police would be able to convince one of them to tell them that he didn't do anything and it was one of the others, would get off as an accessory etc.

Word round these parts is that a team from outside York was brought in to investigate the murder, and were based outside of any police buildings, as they couldn't find enough coppers in the local CID who didn't 'know' her one way or another. It's an intriguing one, no mistake.

Never heard any suggestion that she was on the game Howdi. Just think she enjoyed it, they all do, really. Speaking as a particularly handsome, local male in the right age range, I'm a little surprised that neither Claudia nor Jimmy Savile considered me worthy of their attentions. I must change my aftershave.

It`s staggering that the police only just realised the significance of the CCTV footage
It is believed police have had the film – taken from a security camera on student flats – for six years.
But a review team, which took over the case in 2013, was the first to realise its significance.

The landlady of a different local pub, who also knows the suspect, said yesterday: ‘He said the police spoke to him at the time, but he always made light of it. He said the police went to his house. He is a really funny, really nice guy who reads loads of books. He was very witty.’
Reads books, witty -- sounds like Jeremy Clarkson. And I noticed Top Gear wasn't shown last Sunday. Coincidence? I think not.

I reckon they have a few ideas who it may be, the public showing of the cctv all weekend, then the arrest of this guy they are trying to spook someone into making a move or visiting the body.

One offensive tweet deemed to be racist and 15 police cars descend on the perpetrators but a murder and they only search a nearby alleyway 7 years later ? Makes one wonder who is looking after whom.

It was only when a different review team which took over the case in 2013 deemed the CCTV footage as significant.
Certainly makes you question whether the police system is fit for purpose.

Sorry whenever they arrest someone they always have the police helicopter circling round. The latest suspect released, straight into the "nags head" pub as if to prove he has nothing to fear which he doesn't. All getting a bit embarrassing.

A man arrested by police investigating the disappearance and suspected murder of chef Claudia Lawrence has been released from bail.
The 47-year-old man was arrested last July on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
North Yorkshire Police said the man had been released from his bail conditions after he provided information to detectives which has progressed the investigation.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the decision to release the man from his bail conditions had been made following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.
The spokesman said information provided by the man had clarified certain issues.

Not a lot of activity locally this morning, no sirens no helicopters. They have reinterviewed a lot of people, 3 blokes in their 50s sounds very much like the Friday night poker club, the last guy they arrested was in this "gang". Was told the main line of questioning on the guy was his holiday patterns, he has taken the same week off work every year since Claudia disappeared, and it was the week she disappeared. It was Cheltenham week.

The police line was it because he was feeling guilty? he said no I take those dates off because its Cheltenham. Funny really the Nags Head is always busy for Cheltenham loads of people take that week off and use the bookies over the road.

For a nice bung I can categorically state that anybody who needs an alibi and SAYS they were at Cheltenham 2007 - 2014 was betting with me.
It's a monkey minimum, depending on the severity of the charge.
We don't cover murderers, rapists, paedophiles, or drug barons.

Three men arrested on suspicion of murdering York chef Claudia Lawrence have been released on bail.
Miss Lawrence, who lived in Heworth Road, went missing on 19 March in 2009 when she was 35. Her body has never been found.
The men, all in their 50s and from the York area, were held on Wednesday.
Police said they have been bailed to allow detectives to follow up lines of inquiry. A fourth man in his 50s, arrested in March, remains on bail.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Although they have been released from custody, proceedings in this case - as they relate to them - remain active."
