No - if you're not earning a set amount, you can apply for an exemption certificate...however, it's best to pay nat. insurance voluntarily anyway.

to be fair he does not bet drink or smoke ,and has little  outlay his main spend is  going to watch crystal palace play at home  every 2 weeks and as he is a season ticket holder his outlay is feck all really ,may be in shtook when he needs to renew season ticket next season tho !

if he's only out of work for a short time he needs not bother, by the time he retires he'd normally have made more contributions than needed to get a full pension and even if not you can catch up at a later date

i think at the moment it's 30 years of nat ins payments so at his age it's not worth worring about

Goes up to 35 years contributions required for full pension from next year. Who knows what it'll be when he retires though.

There is a time limit for topping up missed years contributions - something like 6 years, with some exceptions. All the info is online.

thanks for that lads ,reckon once he has had the holiday and  his savings start nosediving he will be back on the scratcher or in employment

I was similar at his age but if he doesn't have over 6k savings he may as well sign on , though can be a pain & social stigma at a young age

Paying NI isn't as easy as some make out , if you're Self employed you can pay the lower rate but if you're neither Self employed or Unemployed like me , you pay the Top rate just as if you were working , which is why I don't pay it any longer

I don't think you're mistaken TMM.

I've been self-employed for twenty years and never brought a NI stamp. Blush

When I read my tax return thingymygybs there is some NI contributions deducted (I think). It's not something I'm going to worry about anyway.

I wouldn`t worry kenbo, by the time you retire the Tories will have abolished the pension anyway. Devil
