THE NEPTUNE NOVICES HURDLE
Two winning favourites, one winning 2nd favourtie and 3 winning 4th favourites
in 2009 and 2013 the first 3 in the betting were the first 3 home.
in 2011 the first 4 in the betting were the first 4 home.
In 2014 the favourite and 2nd favourite were first and third
When the favourite or 2nd favourite didn't win in 2008, 2010 or 2011, the 4th favourite won all 3.
Just 4 of the 21 places came from outside the first 5 in the market, and they were all 2nd.
Definitely not a race to punt on big priced horses

THE RSA CHASE
Only 2 clear favourites (winners 2008 & 2009) have got in the first 3 home in the last 7 runnings
The joint second worst non handicap race at the Festival over 7 years for placed marlet leaders (coupled with the Albert Bartlett Hurdle)
with just 10 of the first 4 in the betting market in the first 3 home in 7 years
One joint favourite (2nd) one 2nd favourite (3rd) three joint 2nd favs (2nd and 2 x 3rds)
and one 3rd favourite, have made the frame in 7 runnings, but none of them in a year when the favourite won.
A race for the middle of the market, apart from the 8 mentioned above, only 4 of the remaning
13 places went to those outside the first 7 in the betting.

THE CORAL CUP
Unsurprisingly, a graveyard for favourites.
The first 4 home for 7 years = 28 places, and only 6 from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the betting have been placed.
Not one clear favourite has got in the first 4 home in the last 7 runnings
The joint 2nd fav in 2008 is the most fancied runner to win it in 7 years
The joint 2nd favourite was also 3rd in 2014.
The 3rd favourite was 3rd in 2009.
Despite the lack of placed favourites
the winner and second have only seen one horse outside the first 7 in the betting, when the joint 27th favourite was 2nd in 2010
The 3rd and 4th places have been a different kettle of swimming things
Of the 14 places available, 8 have come from outside the first 12 in the market
Get your lucky pin out...

THE CHAMPION CHASE
In 2009 and 2012, the first 3 home were the first 3 in the betting.
3 clear favourites and two 2nd favourites have won, 2 clear favourites and 2 x 2nd favourites were 2nd
2 joint 2nd favourites have finished 2nd and 3rd, and one clear 2nd favourite also finished 3rd.
Only one clear 3rd favourite (2012) has made the frame in 7 runnings.
Apart from the 2nd (joint 7th fav) and the 3rd (the rag) in 2014, and the 3rd (7th favourite) in 2011,
nothing outside the first 5 in the market has made the frame

CROSS COUNTRY CHASE
In 2009 the first 5 home were the first 5 in the betting, the only time it happened in any handicap race in the last 7 years
Only 3 clear favourites have got in the frame (2nd 2009, 3rd 2014 and 4th 2011)  in the last 7 runnings
The 2nd favourite has been in the frame in all 7 runnings (3 wins, 2 came 2nd,  a 3rd and a 4th)
The clear 3rd favourite has won twice (2011 & 2012) and was 3rd in 2009
After the first 3 in betting filled 13 of the 28 places, 5 of the remaining 15 places were horses outside the first 10 in the betting

THE CHAMPION BUMPER
Another costly race for favourite backers, and the worst of the non-handicap races for market leaders being placed.
Only 8 of the first 4 in the market made the frame in 7 runnings.
Apart from 2009, when the 2nd favourite won, the other 6 winners
all came from outside the first 5 in the betting
No winning favourite in 7 runnings, but two 2nds and 2 thirds, plus a 2nd placed joint favourite.
One 3rd favourite managed a 2nd place
In 2011 the first 5 home came from outside the first 5 in the market.

THE PERTEMPS FINAL
The worst race of the whole Festival for placed favourites using the past 7 years of results.
Just one winning favourite (2014) and no places.
A joint favourite was 2nd in 2008, with no other places
The 2nd favourite was 4th in 2013, with no other places
The 3rd favourite was 3rd in 2011, with no other places
The 4th favourite was 3rd in 2013, with no other places

11 of the first 4 home (28 places) including the 2013 winner (12th favourite) came from outside the first 10 in the betting
Big priced horses did okay in 4th place, where 5 of the last 7 came from outside the first 14 in the betting.

THE RYANAIR CHASE
Now there's a funny thing - 7 years of the 3 market leaders...
2 winning favourites (2012 & 2014)  3 winning 2nd favs (2009, 2011 & 2013)  and a winning joint 2nd favourite (2008)
3 favourites (2009,2010 & 2013)  a joint 2nd fav (2008) and a 3rd favourite (2011) have finished 2nd.
That left 10 horses from the first 3 in the betting unaccounted for, and not one of them finished 3rd.
(6 of them finished 4th or 5th, but that's no help in this race)
Only 3 horses, 2010 (winner and third) and the 2013 third, came from outside the first 6 in the market.

THE WORLD HURDLE
In 2011 the first 3 home were in market order.
The first 5 in the betting were the first 5 home in 2008, but not in market order.
4 favourites (2008, 2010 - 2012) two 3rd favourites (2009 & 2014) and a 4th favourite (2013) were the last 7 winners.
2nd place went to the favourite in 2014, and 2 x 2nd favourites in 2009 & 2011
The 3rd favourite grabbed 3rd spot in 2011
The 3rd in 2010 and the 2nd in 2013 were the only two in the frame in 7 years from outside the first 6 in the betting.
No point in backing big prices here.

The 2nd favourite is the placepotters enemy, finishing 4th or 5th on no less than 5 occasions out of 7.

BROWN ADVISORY HANDICAP CHASE
The 2008 race saw smallish payout queues at the joints with the only clear rag to win any Festival race in the last 7 years when Mister McGoldrick relished the soft ground and won by a fair distance at 66/1.

The favourite obliged in 2012, while no other winner was in the first 6 in the betting.

The favourite nabbed 3 second places (2009 & 2010) and a third place (2011)
The 2nd favourite was 4th in 2008 & 2013.

3rd favourites claimed 2 second places (2008 & 2013) and a 3rd place in 2009
The 4th favourite was 4th in 2014

The joint 4th favourite was 4th in 2013, and the 5th favourite was 4th in 2009

10 of the 28 horses that filled the frame came from outside the first 12 in the market

COUNTY HURDLE
Another graveyard for those at the head of the market, but marginally better than the Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle.

The best backed winner was the joint 3rd favourite who claimed victory in 2013

The 2011 winner was joint 4th favourite and the 2014 winner was 5th favourite.

The 2009 winner was joint 7th favourite and the other 3 winners of the last 7 years came from outside the first 10 in the betting.

Only one favourite has got in the first 5 home, when it was 2nd in 2008

Two 2nd favourites have finished second (2011 & 2014) the 5th favourite was 2nd in 2013 and the other 3 seconds came from outside the first 15 in the betting

The 3rd favourite was 3rd in 2013, as were 2 x joint 7th favourites in 2012 & 2014

The other 3rd placed horses (4 of them) were outside the first 10 in the betting

The most fancied horse to get 4th was the 8th favourite in 2013, the other 4th placed horses (6 of them) went to those that were all outside the first 10 in the market, with 3 of them also being outside the first 20 in the betting.

The closest 4th favourites got were 2nd in 2011 and 3rd in 2009
The horses above account for 15 of the first 3 home over 7 years
Of the other 6 places, only 1 came from outside the first 7 in the market, when The Giant Bolster was 2nd at 50s in 2013
The 2014 running saw the winner being 7th best, the 2nd was 6th best, and the 3rd was 5th best.

A quick look at the records reveals that the last time the first 4 in the betting were unplaced was 1997.

One winner that's dark pink (2009 - 2nd favourite)

One winner that's light red (2012 - 3rd favourite) and 3rd in 2013

One winners that's mid-blue (2014 - 4th favourite) also 2nd in 2008

5) Chases make up for 40 miles and 110 yards of the total.   How much distance is covered by hurdle races.

Answer - 29 miles and 6 furlongs.

If you thought it was a simple maths question and  subtracted 40 miles and 110 yards from 71 miles and 7 furlongs you never allowed for the Champion Bumper.

6) Who rode the winner of the 1954 Triumph Hurdle winner
Answer - The flat racing legend, Lester Piggott

7) Which race did trainer Vincent O’Brien win 10 times in 8 years (that’s not a typo)
Answer - The Supreme Novices Hurdle.
It used to be run as the Gloucester Hurdle, and was split into divisions.
He won one division in 1952, one again in 1954,  two divisions in 1955, two  in 1956, one in 1957, two in 1958 and one in 1959.

8. Who was the last sole top weight to win a handicap at the Festival?
ANSWER -Fingal Bay in the Pertemps Final in 2014

9) Who was the last horse to carry 12 stones to victory
ANSWER - Tammys Hill - 2014 Foxhunters Chase

10) How did journalist Ivor Herbert make the news at Cheltenham.
ANSWER - He actually trained Linwell, the 1957 Gold Cup winner,  but as a journalist he was forbidden to hold a trainers license,  so the name given as the trainer was Charlie Mallon.
