Heartbreaking to watch as those animals destroy thousands of years of history and heritage, all because it was there pre-Islam.
They really are an atrocious bunch of ragtag @rseholes.
Indeed. To be fair, even the CCDA was beginning to suspect as much, based on the mass rapes, beheadings and other atrocities, but it is nice to have it confirmed.

@Foinaven -- It's all our fault. I haven't quite worked out why yet but I'm sure someone will come up the reason before too long.
No they won't. But what they will say is that puritans shut down theatres and destroyed art in the 17th Century under Oliver Cromwell, as if that establishes some sort of moral equivalence.

Most if not all cultures have done it to some extent. Napoleon's soldiers used the nose of the Sphinx for target practice, Henry VIII carried on the work of his father destroying monastries, the taliban blew up the giant Buddhas of Bamiyan etc. IS are even destroying Shia mosques in their territory, only one flavour is permitted.

Napoleon did not destroy wantonly..in fact he ushered in a new era of archaeology
Still considering what IS have been doing to people, this seems mild...I agree with Velasquez
I shall be glad when they are gone
As for being our fault, well I still think we should have left Saddam in power, not much we can do now, except remove IS

Yes the "west" did things like this, but it's not an excuse. I've seen things in museums damaged by western iconoclasts, it made me pretty angry at their ignorance, not sympathetic. We also used to burn witches or kill for trivial reasons, but we were arseh*les and have moved on, we know better now.
The point is how do get these sort of people from medieval ignorance to civilisation, or just stop them. And it's not going to be by revisionary history about how Bush or Blair made big mistakes no matter how this may be, or lots of hand wringing and trying to project blame back on ourselves for other peoples bad qualities, even if this is what makes lefties feel happy.

I heard of a guy who did beautiful flower paintings and after he split from his girlfriend, she slashed his paintings. He exhibited them with the slash marks (at a contemporary gallery) and they sold out.

The problem here is that Western interference seems to be sending these people back to medieval ignorance
Saddam and Gadhafi were progressive Arab leaders
I am not doing revisionist history since I knew Bush and Blair were wrong at the time.
I do not have the answer, other than we try to understand these people better, and ensure our own motives are correct, that is all

I agree with you to a large extent ebul :) We should have left the above countries alone, I felt so at the time, and especially now, in retrospect.
What annoys me is after Sadman, that was clearly a big bloody badly handled mistake, we didn't learn and did the same with the Colonel, and some are still trying to exacerbate this by making the same mistakes in other countries. It seems to be these bad men were the only thing keeping even worse men from wreaking havoc..
But that's in the past, we have to deal with the now. And anyway, the above has little to do with Nigeria and so on.

Perhaps Bush and Blair were wrong but I don't think you could describe Saddam and Gadhafi as "progressive". My suggestion would be "repressive dictators" who managed to keep dissent under control with an iron fist.

Well yes, foinavon. You look at what these nut cases are doing to people, the christians and minorities in that area would far rather have a bit less freedom, live their lives, raise their families, and keep their heads, than be casually slaughtered by these evil bast*rds as heretics.
Oddly enough!

Lest anyone forget, we in the UK have already had a small-scale foretaste of the vandalism and destruction that will inevitably come when the UK-based Wannabe Terrorists are finally emboldened to do so. (Possibly encouraged as a result of lefty media cretins floating the idea that we in Britain might be at fault for Jihadi John and his ilk).
We've had War Memorials defaced (and poppies burned) by Peace Lovers in recent years, and not forgetting National Monuments that were clambered all over during that ludicrous 'ANTI Free Speech' Protest a few weekends ago that finished in Downing Street.
Coming to your town soon.

A case of "You don't know what you have 'til it's gone". Hardly a paradise even back then but would agree infinitely preferable to the present for many.

I totally agree
I also doubt that admitting we may have been at fault in the past will make terrorism worse myself. It may help everybody to move on, if we do.

Ebul, it's entirely possible to be mean well and be wrong, for example I genuinely think Blair wasn't evil, he meant the best, but it was a disaster. Also I think many on the left mean well, but they would lead to disaster, Also I think many on the right mean well, but they would lead to disaster,
What I'm saying is that, and this may be novel .. .. the road to hell is paved with good intentions :)

Sure ebul, IS will just move on if we admit past misdeeds.
Their recent destruction of ancient sites must tell that they are not concerned about the past.
They're only concern is a that their version of Islam envelopes the globe in the near future.

The situation we have with the rest of the M.East and Islam, I think needs defusing.
It is pointless just blaming Islam, we need to find some accommodation
just my own opinion

Once again the indigenous Assyrian people of the area are suffering at the hands of invading Muslims. Virtually outcasts in their own land with millions murdered over the last century, their numbers have dwindle to a tiny fraction of what they once were, many Assyrians choosing to abandon their homeland for fear of death and persecution.

Care should be exercised in using an all-encompassing 'we'. Who's 'we' as used in many instances above ? e.g. I'm not willing to be included in any group comprising people who lived and died hundreds of years ago who never knew that I would exist or who could ever share the values that I have come to embrace as a result of influences from many sources from ancient to modern. Many ongoing problems and conflicts are exacerbated by sloppy use of crude binary opposites like 'us' and 'them'.

Few years back I went to the Greek island of Kefalonia where I visited the Melissani cave. During WW2 the Germans had broken off all the stalactites so they could store more ammunition boxes in there.
